We're running a Jam in NYC for the "final exam" of the [[Grassroots bootcamp]] on June 14-15 in Manhattan, NYC, USA.

In two days, we'll be building a School In A Box kit (focused on integrating XO use into specific curricular modules) and testing it with local children in preparation for deploying the Kit at an actual school pilot within 4 months - stay tuned for more on the specific deployment conditions we'll be designing for. All materials will be provided. '''All work produced at the Jam will be released either into the public domain or under a free/open license.'''
We will focus on development/deployment of projects from the host organzation that involve software (or hardware) that could work on/with the XO, or projects/deployment that could involve the use of XOs. Secondarily, we will meet with and build connections to NYC-area grassroots groups.

=== What we need from a host location ===

* space, chairs and tables (our crew can come on Friday afternoon to set up and so forth) - access to a microphone, projectors/large-screen monitor, etc. would help, but we can improvise equipment
* wireless internet access for attendees at the location
* a budget for supplies, t-shirt printing, and food (say $20/person and you can set how many people you'd like to have - 100?)
* permission to use your logo (if you want it on the publicity)
* permission to bug your developers, if you want your projects worked on - we can send somebody in NYC for a day or two this month to spend an hour or two with the team for each project you'd like people to work on
* access to development resources (your server/bug-tracking tools/repositories if you want people to contribute directly to those resources, or a request to set something like that up for your project on your servers, or a request to set something like that up for your project on our servers)

=== What we can provide ===

We can do the rest.

* publicity
* attendee recruitment
* registration
* designing and printing t-shirts
* running the space during the weekend itself
*making sure code repositories and tickets and etc. are hosted and ready to go
* setup and cleanup
* talking with your developers to get their projects ready for jammin'
* can talk about additional things as needed

Jams are collaboratively organized events, so the best way to get started is to just dive in and introduce yourself. Participating in this Jam? Have ideas? Want to coordinate rides, teams, projects, or talk about the Jam? Edit the [[Talk:Grassroots Jam|Jam Talk Page]]!

Introduction

We're running a Jam in NYC for the "final exam" of the Grassroots bootcamp on June 14-15 in Manhattan, NYC, USA.

All work produced at the Jam will be released either into the public domain or under a free/open license.

What is a Jam?

An OLPC Jam is a content creation crunch that gets participants from idea to reality in just a few days. By the end of the Jam, you'll have something finished to test with local schoolchildren (who serve as judges for the event). It's a great way to get started developing for OLPC. We're looking for a 50-person team of educators, content-creators, artists, writers, programmers, engineers, and others who can contribute to a School In A Box kit. In addition to coming up for ways for teachers to use the things inside The Box, we'll need to figure out (and make) what's in The Box, how schools will repair equipment from The Box, how The Box is transported and stored, how its content can be localized, how The Box can be used for communication over a diverse set of networks, and more. Apply now!

We are also looking for young testers (ages 7-14, with their parents) to come in and try out the finished products on Sunday afternoon, June 15, from 3-6pm. RSVP now!
