When I wrote the 'Contribution' section of the [[Security]] page,
I realized that we have some fairly generic means of software
contribution: "code", "design", "test", "organize", and "evangelize".
Could we get some spiffy icons to represent these contributions? See:<br/>

The dev.laptop ticket lists a few other icons he'd like to see - would you be interested in tossing a few together? (you should probably ping me or him)

Have you shown your work to Mel yet? It looks really good.

Yep, in her talk page.

Stamping Review

Yes, so the "stamping" idea is great and translates-obviously, so the U.I. example on my page would have the Review Squad represented by a "half-mask" (instead of the whole one, like the initial one I made-which will be basically the icon in the end, just tweaked) that has the ability to have a "Meeting/Discourse of Importance" with another Reviewer. So, obviously, some one would have to implement this in a sort of program or that kind of atmosphere.

But, it would be Really awesome if, say, your stamp was their stamp of approval, or that they had even had a "meeting" on a subject, kind of like a flag, automatically really really delineating them from the rest of the Users. (This of course introduces competition, which, in learning, is going to be inherent, but also needs to be a bit encouraged-raising the bar). Let me know what you think about that, this could be really cool if we could get someone to implement it.-Delucks 09:36, 1 August 2007 (EDT)Delucks

Re: New Icon

ok, let me know if my words went anywhere-Delucks 09:36, 1 August 2007 (EDT)Delucks

Ok, I have a few comments about the review squad. Maybe I misunderstood what the review squad is to be :) . I thought of it of something to be maintained and developed locally where the XO's are delivered, as a sort of peer reviewing system, which would involve the XO owners (kids), their parents, teachers, etc. Any XO owner (kid) could become a Reviewer for content and activities. He would provide his reviews, and be part of the local (school?) XO kids review group. Any educator could become a reviewer for content and activities. He would provide his reviews, and be part of the local (school?) educators review group. Any parent could become a reviewer for content and activities. He would provide his reviews, and be part of the local (school?) parents review group. All these local groups and reviewers would be able to also access the reviews made by others in other places and other countries where the XO's have been deployed. So my purpose for making this icon was not to be used as a "stamp of approval", but as a "stamp of being reviewed", and as general logo idea for local reviewing groups to adopt/adapt/use. Then again, I'm happy if it is used right now, in another fashion. It is my "gift" to the project :) HoboPrimate 09:55, 1 August 2007 (EDT)

It was intended, originally, to be a primarily local system (and then trickle-up to a worldwide system where kids can swap their thoughts on materials, eventually) but is currently being tested on the worldwide web - not local at all - due to not having enough kids with laptops out there. This is one of those things in a lovely state of flux that will probably change within the next month or two. Mchua 05:48, 14 August 2007 (EDT)

icon needed

I notice (the spoon, etc.) that you seem to like doing icons. I'm fairly bad at making Inkscape cooperate. I need an icon for Tux Paint. There are existing icons of course, but they aren't the right size (grrr, SVG was supposed to fix that problem) and don't follow the Sugar look.

http://tuxpaint.cvs.sourceforge.net/*checkout*/tuxpaint/tuxpaint/data/images/tuxpaint-icon.svg

AlbertCahalan 14:56, 12 August 2007 (EDT)

Thanks. The second one is more true to the original, as seen in my GNOME menu and on the Tux Paint web site. Normally the brush is on the right, in Tux's left hand. Does that work OK as a Sugar icon? If not, maybe just get rid of the brush. The right arm (on left) and mouth seem to be the distinctive features. AlbertCahalan 22:04, 12 August 2007 (EDT)

The third icon is most beautiful, but it's not Tux Paint. I know this is going to sound corny, but to a certain extent Tux Paint is about drawing with Tux. He doesn't really paint the picture for you, but he's there giving helpful tips and advice. Kids get all excited about Tux. AlbertCahalan 22:17, 14 August 2007 (EDT)

re: translate icon

Your work is, as always, amazing. :) There's some comparison & discussion at Talk:Localization#Translate_icon. Mchua 05:48, 14 August 2007 (EDT)

Sorry I missed you

Sorry I missed you on IRC. And didn't notice the new paragraph in the doc! :) Re joining the Write, no problem. :) I demo'ed sharing earlier today with it, and guess I left it up. Good to know invites and such are no longer needed. That was actually only one day, maybe two hours, of potential trac tickets. From playing with the xo, and demoing it for a couple of people, as I went out to get lunch and back (here in Cambridge, a lot of people ask about it as I carry it around). Eg, it took me ~30 minutes to get out of the burger place, as new patrons came in and asked "oh! is that the...?!".  :) Then it takes an hour+ to create the trac tickets. :/ Which is my current task. Oh, and re using 602, yes. curious. MitchellNCharity 22:03, 24 September 2007 (EDT)

Re the great value of fresh eyes, oh yes, I definitely agree. Always a good thing to tell new users, worried about "I'm new at this, don't quite get it yet". That freshness is invaluable. Though you can get a little of the effect yourself. When you go to do something, periodically say "no, can't do that this time, find another way". MitchellNCharity 22:07, 24 September 2007 (EDT)

Would you be interested in doing some random collaborative playing with me? I'm a firm believer in "if it isn't tested, it doesn't work". And I've not had a chance to test anything collaborative. MitchellNCharity 22:19, 24 September 2007 (EDT)

Just a friendly poke

There a bunch of open art projects listed right now, so if you have some spare time, look them over and see if there any that appeal to you. --Nikki 21:58, 10 December 2007 (EST)

Ah, thanks. Excellent.

More art, if you have time

There are a few things SJ would like to have done, so if you have any free time (emphasis on if ;) ), you should hop over to Art Wanted and check it out.

Localizing the call for books

Please help localize this message: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/User:Sj/Log/xo_hackathon

I already have one pt: link to my blog from a site that itself doesn't get so much traffic; they could also use a followup comment when the original note is in portuguese. --Sj talk 02:45, 16 February 2008 (EST)

XO Repair Shops -- graphical guidelines / icons / templates

Mel said you are good at this and I agree (just from looking at your user page).
Could you please click on Art_wanted and have a look at the new XO Repair Shop line item? The Birmingham Shop will be opening for business on April 21st. The last conference call with Adam indicated that there will be more comming and all could benefit from some corporate design elements.

ideas on per-activity chat

1. I think it should be possible to not have the frequent text interruptions in this idea. For example, one person in the shared activity may want to concentrate on what he's doing when others are talking. Just some quick thoughts:

Could notifications be used to alert that a participant has new messages? Or have a new UI for within-activity notifications? Perhaps chat messages should appear on frame display only, as a overlay area. Within-activity notifications should also be subtle. Similar to other notifications, when someone has written a new message, a XO icon would slide into view from the right into the position it would take in the frame, blink a few times and disappear. Opening the frame would show all new messages, or the most recent ones from each XO buddy. To see past conversation, you would have some button which would show the previous messages on all the text boxes. It would be important to do this in all of the text boxes, so that you could follow the conversation.

2. I think width should have some hard-cap, and when the text over-flows some vertical limit, have it shown on roll-over.

I think that eventually this per-activity chat should create a scrollback buffer. Having the entire log of the discussion that happened during the collaboration on an activity would be something interesting to have and keep.

It sure would! We'll use it - thanks! Mchua 19:03, 14 May 2008 (EDT)

Grassroots bootcamp logo... again

Grassroots bootcamp has gotten a facelift you may enjoy. ;) Mchua 00:05, 15 May 2008 (EDT)

review logos and more!

I love the review logo, especially if we have a star that shape for marking the best {articles, collections, activities}.

Updating the collections page : make a Projects/Olhar musical pelos residuos page with a project-summary template, and then transclude that in the page: {{:Projects/Olhar musical pelos residuos}}. Then it will have its own summary page and that summary will show up in the table.

You can see the same thing at activities/tmp ... which I hope to swap in for the current activities page soon. --Sj talk 00:32, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
