CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION

The aim of this educational project, is on one hand to bring Universal Primary Education by 2015 as - anno year 2000 initiated - United Nations Millennium Development Goal nr.2. On the other hand, OLPC's mission is to manage the open hard and software project, to bring forward the best possible laptop combination for education: the XO-XServer combination. For this and above approach, - and also a lot of lobbying by the right persons on the right places and time - the United Nations is a Partner in this Open Community project! It is the largest educational project undertaken by Humanity ever, and deemed by many as one of the most inspiring projects out there. Things are moving very fast indeed: 2008 saw the first 3 countries with full coverage, i.e. with all kids age 5 to 12 equipped with these smallest schools in a box-laptops and Australia is now following at fast pace too, over 86.000 eBooks available, all education disciplines covered, etc. etc..

OLPC is a not for profit that tries to remain as small as possible and is focussed on making sure the One Laptop Per Child initiative and hardware stays open source and open hardware. OLPC offers tools for the community to collaborate in working on the soft and hardware and helping out with deploying OLPC projects. OLPC soft and hardware is free to be used by all. OLPC has not opened and will not set-up any legal OLPC Mozambique entity in Mozambique. OLPC is sure that there are competent individuals that will come together in an organization or that some existing organization will take up the lead in building a dynamic community that will take the OLPC initiative into Mozambique. It is not possible in making a profit on the laptops. The prices are open and the same to everybody and merely depend on massive numbers. The only way to eventually earn money is by providing assistance to deploy - get through the different phases - and accompany the project, assisting the government in deploying One Laptop Per Child, assisting with training teachers, collaborating in making dedicated ebooks, etc.

Mozambique is a very multi-cultural society with a very diverse diaspora. We hope that this diaspora will work their way to these pages and that the Maltese society will benefit from these citizens with one leg in Mozambique and another still in their countries of origin to develop leadership for OLPC, Agenda 21, the MDG's and accelerate bringing the level that our planet can be a nice place for all humans to new and inspiring heights for generations to come.

This page is dedicated to those interested in XO machines in Mozambique. While there are currently no national-level deployments in place, 200 machines were delivered there by Rachel Kropa thanks to a donation from CAA. (some photos from her trip)

A few other machines have been sent to the country by other interested parties, including Jennifer DB (below) and there are groups interested in smaller pilot studies of the computers. Anyone interested in these studies, the country itself and relevant issues, or new ideas is welcome to submit their thoughts to this page.

Mozambique is one of the Least Developed Countries.
Governmental cooperation focuses on Belgium’s 18 partner countries, i.e. developing countries with which our country has concluded a general cooperation agreement and adopted multiannual Indicative Cooperation Programmes (ICPs).

Belgium can also take action in various other countries through a range of channels and actors, including NGOs, multilateral cooperation and emergency aid programmes, among others.

The classification by the Development Assistance Committee (DAC), a sub-group of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), determines whether or not a country can be deemed a developing country and therefore whether the aid received by that country can be considered official development assistance (ODA). The list is published on the OECD website.

OLPC link Health Education Intervention
Motivation
A health education activity was designed for a pilot study in rural Zambezia, in northern Mozambique. This intervention was to put health education information on the laptop in an engaging manner, specifically related to HIV/AIDS and infectious diseases. The program was evaluated on its own and in conjunction with teacher training on the program. For program reports, see Jumpbean.
Given that the XO laptops will be distributed to a large number of children in the developing world for them to “explore, experiment, and express themselves,” these machines provide the possibility of an added educational component for these users. It is necessary, therefore, to demonstrate the effectiveness of this technology as an educational tool. This project will demonstrate the existence, size, and scope of this effectiveness in the pressing area of HIV/AIDS/infectious disease knowledge and attitudes.

The researchers at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of Education will be able to contribute in multiple dimensions to this project. First, they will begin to model the causal relationship between this new educational technology and student outcomes. Second, they will be able to profoundly inform the pedagogical construction of the specific software for the intervention to increase the likelihood of its effectiveness. The OLPC machines offer unique capacities that could be exploited for the greatest educational impact.
