David Cavallo is representing OLPC on the ground in Brasil. Rodrigo Mesquita has been an important friend to and advocate for the project and, in general, the cause of children and learning in Brasil.

We've set up a mailing list for OLPC Brasil (to join, send a message to brasil-request@laptop.org with subscribe in the Subject Field).

Um exemplo do que foi exposto acima

Em 17 de outubro, o dono do IP 2006 201.12.74.15 incluiu no item "Ações governamentais" uma crítica, por sinal infundada, completamente fora do objetivo da página.

Espanta-me que este IP estivesse autorizado a editar o Wiki e que não soubesse, ou deliberadamente ignorasse, o comportamento para seu bom uso.

Daí podemos tirar o quão é difícil fazer algo construtivo e agregador. Se não sabemos como nos comportar e se não temos consciência de como o momento político possibilitou chegar aonde estamos. Mesmo ainda longe do que gostaríamos, estamos mais perto e dentro do caminho. Coisa que nunca poderíamos imaginar a 4 anos atrás ou num futuro com a alternativa dada.

As ações do governo não param, mas o encaminhamento dessas ações dependem muito mais do trabalho da comunidade brasileira do que do governo. A maior iniciativa governamental que podemos esperar está na decisão política de apoiar a OLPC, o resto é com a gente mesmo.

Contradições

Uma das principais características do projeto OLPC é o fato de ter seu sistema operacional e conteúdo produzidos em software livre (não confundir com gratuito) e em código aberto. Isso posto, não fica bem lincar a essa wiki endereços de meios que se valham de software proprietário para sua visualização. Até porque é difícil, senão impraticável, asssitir a videos em formato wmv numa máquina Linux.

Esperando boas e úteis contribuições

Esta página não é uma página de fatos sobre o Brasil. É uma página wiki de fatos sobre o projeto OLPC no Brasil: um resumo da história, do projeto e das ações realizadas por alguns segmentos da sociedade brasileira (governo, indústria, academia, comunidade...), envolvidos direta ou indiretamente com o projeto. Quem quiser saber mais sobre o Brasil, que vá buscar dados demográficos em outro lugar.

I'm assuming that you refer to the info-box I added? I sort of see your point... my objective was to provide information that puts some context and perspective to the dimension and impact of the project in each country. How many people are we talking about? Population density? Literacy levels? School population?

And the one you put is formidable, but if any information, even as good as country demographics, is to populate this wikipage, the relevancy of the page itself will be lost. I'm glad to hear that! :) And (in general) agree with your PoV. The demographic information you kindly propose to collaborate with and put in a new page is already available (somewhat) at OLPC Country Statistics. Data is just that, numbers. The project has to determine, as a whole, what numbers are interesting, relevant, appropriate, or not to be included, expanded or discarded. Any ideas on what numbers should or should not appear on that page is also welcome!

I thought that it would be 'better' to deviate (a bit, not too much) the attention away from the computer & political aspects and try to highlight the social aspects. Agree, GDP is not a very 'humane' or 'social' number... ;) but HDI, Gini coefficient and other data I feel is relevant or at least worth mentioning somewhere visible for each country.

I tried to put the demographic data following wikipedia's style, which I found to be a good resume and with a sufficiently distinct style to be clearly differentiated from whatever other sections present in each country's page.

Any feedback regarding the appropriateness, style, items, or whatever about the template is welcome. I'm just trying to highlight other aspects of the project that I feel are not only relevant but essential to the project as a whole - not just silica, bits & bytes, but rather how many people will have their lives (potentially) affected, what is their socio-economic lifestyle, and things like that.
