I love webcomics, and I am currently working on a [[http://hdi.smackjeeves.com collaboration webcomic]] (there are some things about it that I'm not thrilled with, but overall I think it's a pretty good first start, and it improves as time goes by). I'm also interested in different formats available for webcomics; the one I currently work on is somewhat restricted due to my current materials and the length of the scripts given to me (each page generally contains a coherent set of incidents that may or may not tie into an overarching storyline). While I don't think I would be able to commit to an entire other webcomic at this point in my life, I'd be more than willing to provide guest or semi-regular (or low volume) artwork. |

Project description
Some potential ideas...
- OLPC how-tos - in the vein of http://www.howtoons.com/

Why I'm qualified: I've been drawing on computers for as long as I can remember. I am an avid webcomic fan, and have produced my own comics and webcomics off-and-on. I am a media studies major with an emphasis in digital/electronic media and my senior project next year will be an online graphic novel. I have been doing web design for over a year now and worked on the new FreeCulture.org site.
My idea for the webcomic: "The Adventures of Hero-Man and Holly." Hero-Man (a Superman-type hero character) and the evil Mister Maufare have been fighting an epic battle for weeks. Holly, a nine-year-old girl and a huge fan of Hero-Man comics, has been waiting and waiting for the next issue to come out, so she can find out whether Hero-Man lives or dies. Unfortunately, she learns that Hero-Man has been canceled and the next issue will never come out! How will she find out Hero-Man's fate now?
Convinced that Hero-Man's cancellation was really a secret plot by Maufare to destroy the gold-hearted protector of the innocent, she decides to revive him herself. Using old panels from previous issues and her own art, she tells the story of how Hero-Man and new sidekick Super-Holly fight back. Her uncle and younger brother join in with their own additions to Holly's story. Will she and Hero-Man successfully defeat Maufare's Cancellation Ray? Only time will tell!
The webcomic itself will move between several different styles of (web)comics--from professional superhero-style art, to more "indie" (but realistic) art, to child drawings made with a touchpad and TuxPaint, to photograph-based comics. Through the story, kids will learn about how to use different art techniques and hopefully realize that a.) their own art, even clipart, can be just as good at telling a story as Golden-Age comics; and b.) they don't need a four-thousand-dollar setup to make a comic.
Here's a quick demo drawing of Hero-Man and Holly.

User page has contact info. I'm interested in getting others interested in making webcomics - graphical forms of communication and documentation (with fewer written words comes less of an internationalization problem, since it removes the burden of translating).
