About OLPC The Netherlands

OLPC The Netherlands (OLPC-NL for short) is a grassroots group interested in contributing to the OLPC project. We are just starting up and are looking for more like minded people.

People

If you are interested in being part of OLPC-NL too, please add yourself to the list of people.

Contributing to the OLPC project

Workgroups: If you want to contribute to the OLPC project, but don't know where to start, have a look at our workgroups. These groups are working on gathering and sharing information (internationally and nationally), creating strategies and quality standards, initiating new and supporting existing projects. We are looking for individuals, organizations and companies that are interested in contributing by working voluntarily and embrace the idea of openly sharing knowledge.

Currently we have 4 workgroups, that are yet to be organized within themselves by people who actively want to participate and share their expertise. These wikipages are also intended to give a good orientation for newcomers and possible partners. (Work in progress. Bine 05:06, 22 February 2008 (EST)):

  • Workgroup Development
  • Workgroup Content
  • Workgroup Dutch Pilot
  • Workgroup European Give One Get One

Projects: This is the place to present projects, find interested people, exchange thoughts and keep track of the progress of projects.

  • Our 2nd OLPC NL meeting took place on Saturday, January 19th 2008, starting at 2 pm, at the Mensenvereniging Wolbodo (Sociëteit NOVUM), Verwersdijk 102, 2611 NK Delft. We were this time less people than in Amsterdam - around 20 in total - but had excellent presentations from Reinier on how to get involved into software development for OLPC (see his slides at the meetings page, a presentation from Harrie and Geertie, who are going on a 6 month trip through Asia, visiting OLPC projects and trying to contribute, a presentation by Frits, who gave insight into mobile learning and compared several products on the market as well as a stand-up presentation of Pascal on content production (on health issues) and one of Ewoud, on his ideas on dutch pilots and the possibilities for XOs in the Dutch education system. This afternoon was less stuffed with presentations and we had a great time sitting together and having relaxed conversations with each other on what we are working on and exchanging ideas. Everyone is invited to update the Wiki with subjects that have been discussed (and all other ideas of course as well). Harrie & Geertie as well as Reinier have already added their presentations / information on the projects and meeting pages. Also, Yomo and his friends got in contact with Arline about cooperating in her Give Many activity for Suriname. Bine 15:50, 25 January 2008 (EST)

Organisation

We are grassroots[1], thus no big organization. We are currently a group of people, interested in the OLPC project, trying to find likeminded people with diverse expertises (software development, pedagogics, international relations, etc.) and backgrounds, to interconnect and accomplish projects together. Everybody who wants to contribute with his or her input of ideas and workpower, is welcome. We neither operate memberschips nor a budget as an organization.

OLPC-NL To Do List - These are tasks we'd like to accomplish, in order to get OLPC NL started up and keep it running. Please have a look and see if you can help with any of the to-do's or add any to-do's that you think are important.

Communication

We aim to have all information available on this Wiki - please keep it up to date and use it as a platform to work with each other.
When writing something on the Wiki, please finish off with 4 times '~', which will leave a user/time-stamp.
In case you open a new project, add another important section or update to the page, please send out a quick messge via the OLPC-NL mailinglist and include a link to the updated Wikipage. Thanks.

Mailing List

IRC

Channel #olpc-nl on FreeNode. Usually you'll find a couple of us online there. Scheduled IRC meetings for interest-groups will be announced in the projects-section, as soon as these pages are set up properly ;-)

Meetings

We aim to have monthly meetings - they usually take place on the third Saturday of the month, between 2 and 6 pm.
Please have a look at OLPC-NL meetings to see when and where the next one is taking place and subscribe to our mailinglist to receive the invitations on time. Active participation in setting up the agenda and spreading the word about our gatherings is highly appreciated. Also, if you know about locations free of charge, where we can spend a Saturday afternoon, please let us know (needs: gratis, a white wall for using a beamer, wireless internet, space for about 30 people, easy to reach with public transport; preferably, but not necessarily: horeca and a somewhat child-friendly setting).
