OLE Nepal

Open Learning Exchange (OLE) Nepal is a Nepali non-governmental organization dedicated to assisting the Government of Nepal in meeting its Education for All goals by developing freely accessible, open-source Information and Communication Technology (ICT)-based educational teaching-learning materials.

Poor quality of education and disparity in education quality and access among school types, regions and population groups are two of the major problems facing Nepal’s education sector. OLE Nepal’s mission is to help address these problems through the use of ICT in education.

In order to fulfill its mission, OLE Nepal is working in partnership with the Government of Nepal to:

• Develop high-quality interactive digital learning materials that conform to Nepal’s national curriculum.
• Maintain a web-based repository of open, free, and high quality elementary and secondary educational resources for teachers and students.
• Build the Nepali government’s capacity to independently develop, enhance and maintain ICT-based teaching-learning materials at the primary and secondary school levels.
• Implement a plan to provide universal access to primary school level ICT-based teaching-learning materials by 2015.
• Conduct research and evaluation concerning the effectiveness of the different educational resources and approaches used.

OLE Nepal Projects

OLE Nepal is quickly developing learning materials to fulfill it's mission as soon as possible. Here is a collection of OLE Nepal projects, both completed and current.

OLE Nepal Interns

At OLE Nepal, interns serve as utility team members, doing everything from revising the Wiki and documenting the OLE Nepal project, to helping with programming and doing just about anything else that needs to be done. You can view their user pages to see what kind of activities they've completed.

• Pradosh Kharel - Pradosh is helping out with system administration, learning Linux, and testing the EPaath software.
• Doug Mayeux - Doug is documenting the OLE Nepal project, updating the Wiki, testing software, and helping to develop the E-Library.

1. document our work on the OLPC wiki
2. Document progress of kids and teachers at test schools
3. documenting how others can contribute to OLPC project in Nepal
4. Learn Etoys, Scratch and find all possible documentation on how to use it and document what is still needed. Teach Manoj and Neema how to use them
5. Conceptualize EToys activities for weather and environment
6. E-Library, can help find stuff and load it, fill in metadata get volunteers to find materials and fill in basic metadata
   • 6 sections of E-Library
     • Literature - English and Nepali -- onlineliterature.org?, esp. children's literature, small audio books would be excellent.
     • Course-related materials, math, english, science
     • Reference material, encyclopedias, thesaurus, atlases and maps
     • Teaching support material, sample lessons, sample exercises, training materials, supplemental readings
     • Other educational materials - disaster mgt, basic health

4. Teach Kamana, Saurav, and Sunil how to use Moodle and get their reactions
5. Take a tour of someone's existing Moodle install

1. Create course according to Dynabook ideas, give me screenshots
2. Find good English and other courses and import them into Moodle
3. Convert Library proposal into a 3 page doc
4. Assign a wiki-related task to Pradosh
5. create one page on this wiki listing all learning resources so far for Scratch
6. Clean up OLE wiki community page

1. Get Jolongo working on the XO
2. Do chapters 10-15 in Rute User guide to linux
3. join localization mailing list http://lists.laptop.org/listinfo/localization, become friends w/ Sayamindu Dasgupta
4. unlock 3 new XO's and apply for developer keys
5. label new XO's and make sure they are in the inventory
6. Create a course in Moodle
7. Install moodle on your desktop
8. Finish translating Etoys from http://dev.laptop.org/translate and XO Core https://dev.laptop.org/translate/ne/xo_core/
9. Get our EToys to run properly on Ubuntu 8.04 w/ audio
10. Read Saurav's write up on OLPC
11. Create Hello World activity for the XO

OLE Nepal Intern Manual

• Intern Manual The OLE Nepal Intern Manual documents all information pertinent to OLE Nepal Interns. This includes everything from Wiki info to a guide for processing and preparing newly received XOs.
