Planned devices for the XO.

Devices will be connected to special unit powered by Atmel programmable CPU.

Here are some ideas for possible devices:

  • Thermometer
  • Voltmeter, ampermeter, ohmmeter
  • Oscilloscope
  • Photodiode
  • PH meter
See also the Digital Signal Processing page for work being done in India

Processor unit

processor type: C8051F321 - Full Speed USB, 16k ISP FLASH MCU Family - ETC CPU specification
cpu size: 6mm x 6mm
board size: 15mm x 30mm
case size: 20mm x 40mm (size similar to USB Bluetooth adapter )

Electrical scheme

Calculated price: CPU unit: cca 6$
board + additional electronic parts: 17$
connectors: 2$

Total price: 25$ (retail price)

CPU unit vs MicIn port

  • Oscilloscope on the CPU unit can sample up to 1MHz
  • CPU unit automatically switches range when measuring resistance, voltage and current
  • CPU unit is much safer for the laptop (only CPU unit will be damaged). If protection on MicIn port fails then whole laptop or sound card is destroyed.
  • CPU unit can switch ranges easily without any additional software or hardware
  • CPU unit can supply 5V and 3,3V to connected sensors
  • Oscilloscope can have more than one channel with the CPU unit

Sensors

Sensors will be connected to the CPU unit. The CPU unit will measure values from the sensors and feed them into application on the XO. (CPU can use every sensor that can convert measurement into voltage or current)

Planned sensors:

  • Thermometer (cca 2$)
  • Voltmeter, ampermeter, ohmmeter, oscilloscope (cca 1$)
  • Photodiode (cca 2$)
  • PH meter

(if you find cheap sensors please add them into this list)
