Upgrade B4 units to Build 616

  1. Insert the 616 USB stick into the laptop while it is powered off.
  2. Power on the laptop, while holding down the Square game key. Stop holding the game key when it tells you to release it.
  3. You may have to power it up twice (on the B4, only once on the C). It is finished when it ends in the 'enter a name' screen.
  4. When it is finished booting, hit Alt+Ctl+Mesh keys together; check that the version number is 616.
  5. If you need to add VIP data go to the next section.
  6. If you are finished and ready to ship, type 'root', and 'shutdown -h now'


To Add VIP info

  1. Power up the laptop, choose nickname and color. Wait for the journal to completely load.
  2. Insert the VIP USB stick
  3. Hit Alt+Ctl+Mesh keys together.
  4. Type 'root'
  5. Type 'cd /media/VIP616/'
  6. Type 'sh extras.sh'
  7. When this finishes; type 'cd /home/olpc'
  8. Use Alt+Ctl+home to go back to sugar, open the journal and unmount the USB from the icon there. When the USB successfully unmounts, then remove it.
  9. Use sugar 'reboot' to go onto the test section.


Test:

  1. Start 'Browse'.
  2. Click on media, then media again on the left hand side. Click on the 'Sesame Street' link.
  3. It will open up in the clipboard; when finished loading, click 'open'; and make sure it plays.
  4. Close Watch&Listen.
  5. Go back to the browser; click on books, and then books again.
  6. Click on the Quaran; open it from the clipboard when it has finished loading.
  7. Close the book.
  8. Open the Turtle Art activity; close it.
  9. In the mesh view, click on the triangle labeled "MediaLab 802.11".
  10. Wait until the circle outline is blinking; then you should see other XOs.
  11. From the browser, click on google search and search on 'cats' (or anything you want); make sure you get a good page.
  12. Go to the Home view, hover over the XO; click on shutdown.


Upgrade B4 units to Build 542.3

  1. Insert the 542.3 USB stick into the laptop while it is powered off.
  2. Power on the laptop, holding down the gamepad X and Square key until it says 'release the key'.
  3. Let it finish the upgrade.
  4. Boot the laptop one more time with the USB stick still connected, this time with the X and Check key pressed.
  5. When it is finished booting, hit Alt+Ctl+Mesh keys together; check that the version number is 542.1.
  6. If you need to add VIP data go to the next section.
  7. If you are finished and ready to ship, type 'root', and 'shutdown -h now'
  8. When it finishes powering all the way off; remove the battery and power adapter and ship it.

To Add VIP info

  1. Power up the laptop, choose nickname and color. Wait for the journal to completely load.
  2. Insert the VIP USB stick
  3. Hit Alt+Ctl+Mesh keys together.
  4. Type 'root'
  5. Type 'sh /media/VIP542_3/extras.sh
  6. When this finishes; type 'cd /home/olpc'
  7. type 'umount /media/VIP542_3/'.
  8. if umount says device is busy; use Alt+Ctl+home to open the journal and unmount the USB from the icon there.
  9. type 'reboot' to restart the laptop.
  10. remove USB stick right when the power goes off before it starts to boot again.


Test:

  1. Check that 'Turtle Art' and 'Watch & Listen' show up in the task bar.
  2. Start 'Watch & Listen'.
  3. Open File, browse in olpc/Library to find 'SeasameStreet' file.
  4. Open it and make sure it plays.
  5. Use esc, and activity tab to close it (try Alt+c if all else).
  6. Open the Turtle Art activity; close it.
  7. Open the Browse activity.
  8. You should see the OLPC newsletter.
  9. Click on the word 'extras'.
  10. Click on map
  11. Click on Browse and then use the back browser button to return.
  12. Click on mesh demo.
  13. Close the browser.
  14. In the mesh view, click on the triangle labeled "MediaLab 802.11".
  15. Wait until the triangle outline is blinking; then you should see other XOs.
  16. Go to the Home view, hover over the XO; click on shutdown.

If you want to remove the name and color chosen, then, before you shutdown:

  1. Alt+Ctl+Mesh
  2. Login as root
  3. cd /home/olpc/.sugar/default
  4. rm config
  5. rm owner.*
  6. power off (to shut down)

Upgrade to 406.15 Build

  1. Boot up laptop with 406.15 stick installed.
  2. At the OK prompt type 'flash u:\boot\q2c18.rom'
  3. When finished; remove the adapter and the battery for a few seconds and then replace; and boot again while holding the 'X' game key. Hit escape when it is counting down 3 seconds.
  4. Check that the OpenFirmware version is now Q2C18.
  5. At the OK prompt type: 'copy-nand u:\boot\n406_15.img'
  6. You will get some messages about skipping bad blocks.
  7. When finished remove the USB stick; shut off the laptop.
  8. Power up the laptop one more time to make sure it boots into sugar.
  9. Hit CTL-ALT-Mesh, to see that version 406.15 is the version.
  10. Type 'shutdown -h now' to shut down.


Change Language
