Purpose of Test Group Release Notes
If you are thinking of loading a new image; come to this page first and see if the build you are going to load has any major problems. If it can't even pass the Smoke Test, you probably don't want to use it.
If you don't see anything here on the latest release, please add your notes on smoke test and/or basic functionality to help the next guy.

Build 699
Release notes are being built here: OLPC Update.1 Software Release Notes
The results from Michael and Yani (smoke test):
Customization:
- We saw a bug today where the customization process would freeze when installing large .xo bundles like tamtamedit.
There is a workaround in customization-2, which was recently sent by mstone.
- Read wasnt included in the Mexico customization. It has been added in customization-2
- Michael managed to update activities/content bundles through the browser
- Customization key wont install if the activities or library directories had already been created as root. This wont apply to freshly reflashed builds.
Activities:
- Couldnt add feed to news reader. Clicking "+"/dropdown on the feeds tab didnt do anything
- The contents of a USB key didnt show in the journal. So couldnt install activity bundles from the USB through the journal.
- Could copy images to the clipboard through record+browse+paint. They were successfully opened in paint and pasted in write!
Collaboration
- Activities were reliably sharing between 2 XOs in the same School server mesh, and also in simple mesh. This was tested with write/distance/chat/memorize
- Some XOs were connected to APs, while still running salut in channel 6.
These could very reliably exchange presence info(XOs showed in meshview/received activity invitations/joined public activities) with each other and also with the ones connected to the SS in channel 6. However, no application traffic was able to be shared. This was tested in many activites including write/chat/pippy/connect and others. These XOs had different msh0 ip subnets(one was SS,msh0=172.18.x.x, other was AP,msh0=169.254.x.x). Perhaps this explains why the traffic data wasnt sent? But again, presence traffic was shared fine.
- Some times when joining a Chat the activity wasnt responding. Keystrokes were shown int he edit box.
The log displayed : "groupadd: group 10019 exists Creating mailbox file: File exists". The bug wasnt consistent though Seemed identical to 6499
- We couldn't manage to make read share, although didnt test extensively. Perhaps this is still related to 6483.
Network
- WEP/WPA initially worked fine and were tested several times. However after some time no XOs could connect to the WPA/olpc. The icon also disappeared in one of the XOs. Perhaps smth was wrong with the AP.
- Disabling salut(6299) was working fine. Salut + Avahi traffic were successfully disabled for some minutes when receiving a public ip.
- Only one telepathy-salut crash was seen. It seemed that 6310 was fixed. More testing needs to be done here.
- Also I didnt manage to reproduce the xmas-tree effect(5501). I wasnt aware that the new telepathy-salut was attempting to fix it. This is good news!
- Last but not least: The inhibit-idle-suspend flag stops the XO from suspending automatically.
I was under the impression that a suspended XO will wake with MDNS packets. However, I removed the inhibit-idle-suspend flag and suspended for 15min. When resumed, all the XOs were failed in avahi. It seems that MDNS packets didnt wake it. Are there different rules for resuming from automatic suspend vs resuming from manual suspend? This needs to be further looked into.
Build 697
- Only chat, browse, write, record, and paint show up in the activities bar. Nor will activities from other applications resume from the journal. They appear to have been disassociated. - Herbert 16:00, 7 March 2008 (EST)
Build 695 (2008-02-28)
- Record activity takes ~10 seconds to begin recording video, after suspend/resume (bug #4255) - Ghopper 22:30, 2 March 2008 (EST)
Build 693 Q2D13
- Still having problems with sharing read and write. One time I was able to successfully share a pdf via Read between two laptops running 693; but then I couldn't repeat that even after rebooting both laptops. Perhaps with a smaller pdf.
- Sharing Write continues to crash when you open other activities (such as record)
One Hour Test:
- Boot up after upgrade via olpc-upgrade upgrade.1-693 on non-writeprotected laptops. [NOTE: on C1 or B4 laptops I think you have to have a UUID and a SN, and perhaps other items, in the mfg-data or the laptop will not boot the un-signed OS; I havent' figured out all the details]
- Individual activities open up and close down properly: Chat, Browse, Write, Record
- Even when Read refuses to share, and the mesh neighborhood view stops reporting on shared activities; chat continues to share properly.
I turned off both security and suspend (rm /etc/olpc-security; touch /etc/ohm/inhibit-suspend); and used simple mesh only:
- After a reboot; Sharing is much more reliable. I shared photos, write docs, Browse links, added pictures to write docs, and the measure and chat shared properly. I still can't repeatably share a large pdf. It might be the size of the pdf.

Build 691 Q2D13
- Using olpc-update to upgrade from 690 to 691 - I could not connect to a WPA access point. I deleted the '/home/olpc/.sugar/default/nm/network.cfg' file; rebooted and it worked. 6370
- For WEP or WPA, the access point must be set to channel 1, 6, or 11 for the XO to connect.(I have 691 working with WPA on channel 2)
- Trac #6046: XO is slow after upgrade. Update.1 builds contain a time synchronization mechanism, which may leave the font cache in the 'future'. Until real time catches up, fontconfig is unhappy.
One Hour Test:
- Boot up after upgrade was good; open AP, WPA (after above work around), and school server mesh all worked.
- Record, Write, Journal, Browse all opened up with good basic functionality
- olpc-update candidate-691
- 1st XO, 650 -> 691, failure return code 1 (twice two different files), re-update again, finally complete no errors
- could of been in low battery state, was less than 20% left. after plug-in, booted fine, did auto-reset of OFW. works ok.
- 2nd XO, joyride 1643 -> 691, /691-Errors but appears to be fine.
- 1st XO, 650 -> 691, failure return code 1 (twice two different files), re-update again, finally complete no errors
- Problem copying a photo to a write doc - 6405
- Problem when sharing a document; try to add a photo and write crashes - 6407
Build 690 Q2D10 (RC1)
- Can't connect to WEP, #6123; maybe a work around if you create the networks.config file by hand.
- workarounds discovered so far --Chihyu 16:01, 28 January 2008 (EST)
- Suspend is occurring at in-appropriate times, like when trying to rotate the screen or open an activity, #6235
- USB drive might not be recognized in Journal; the workaround is to remove olpc.store from the USB drive. (#6269) --Chihyu 11:43, 30 January 2008 (EST)
- Battery light problem with q2d10 (#6227); q2d10a fixes this. --Chihyu 11:47, 30 January 2008 (EST)
Build 689 (Exclusively for Mongolia?)
Smoke test results
Tested on a MP machine with firmware Q2D08a.
- When Write is launched, the cursor turns into a horizontal arrow, but this does not affect editing, and one can get rid of it by moving the cursor around.
- Suspend/Resume doesn't seem to work, see #5976
- not fully localized in Spanish (#5968)
- not tested: filling up journal
Build 687 (not quite RC1)
Smoke test results
Tested on a MP machine with firmware Q2D09.
- Either something wrong with the firmware, or with the activities (#6187):
Write is broken. If Record Activity is open, the cursor in Write turns into a horizontal arrow, and one cannot type anything in the work area. Hitting Alt-1 cannot take a screen shot; instead, it adds multiple "Write Activity" entries to the Journal. If Write is the only activity that's open, the cursor still turns into a horizontal arrow, but one should be able to type in the work area and get rid of the horizontal arrow by moving the mouse around. #6164- If Record is open, one will also have trouble typing in the text field in Journal. Other key presses (Home /Mesh/Neighborhood view, toggle frames, Alt-tab) will not be acted upon, either.
- It takes around 10 seconds to share a Write activity between two machines (same build, connected to the same school server mesh).
- Buddy disappears while sharing an activity with another XO (same build, connected to the same school server mesh). #6169
- Net bible can be installed and read, but the "download completed" message cannot be closed in the browser.
- not fully localized in Spanish (#5968)
- not tested: filling up journal
Build 684
Smoke test results
Tested on a MP machine with firmware Q2D08a.
- olpc-netstatus error #5925
- not fully localized in Spanish (#5968)
- not tested: filling up the journal
Build 681
Smoke test results
Tested on a MP machine with firmware Q2D08a.
- coping clipboard image to Journal creates 2 additional journal entries for "Terminal activity"
- online ogg file sounds choppy, local ogg file sounds fine
- not tested: installing activity bundle and library bundle, filling up the journal
Ship2 Builds
Build 656, Ship.2.2
- OLPC_SW-ECO_2 - Release info
Smoke test results:
- Could not test Installing an Activity Bundle from the web due to known IPv6 issues with laptop.org
- Could not test Installing a library bundle due to known IPv6 issues with laptop.org
- Issues encountered (not specific regressions in this build, I'm a new user and these were the biggest issues I noticed):
- #5896 can't save TamTamJam changes (fixed for update1)
- #5905 typing in TamTamJam "activity" tab has 2 purposes
- #5910 Overlay button produces white blob
- System sluggishness particularly with the browser, leading to unresponsive frame taking minutes to disappear [seems much better in joyride]
- Occasionally saw frame-not-disappearing issue but the frame and the underlying app seemed fully responsive (i.e. system didn't seem to be struggling with swap or anything) [have not seen this in joyride]

Build 653, Ship.2.1
Build 650, Ship.2 Release
1 Hour Smoke Results
- This build has successfully booted into sugar on WP and unsecured laptops. The journal loads.
- Tried out a few activities: chat (3way), record (bug with lost pictures is fixed), write, measure, tamtam, browse, paint, pippy.
- There are some issues with Write shutting down when trying to use it with Chat #5249
- I successfully downloaded the gmail activity; and ran it; read some mail.
- I tried to download the Lewis Carrol bundle, but it didn't seem to show up on my library links even after refresh. Can't resume from journal either, so I can't figure out how to see this bundle.
- Image transfer: It takes a really, really long time to insert an image into AbiWord -- there is no indication that anything is happening, #5175.
- Private and public invitation to write worked via salut (no jabber service at this time).

Build 642
(should be the same as 641 except that it has security turned off, no ohm, and fewer activities)
1 Hour Smoke Test Results
- Try out a few activities: Good
- mime type issue with record still there.
- Image Transferring and Invite: Good
- Installing an Activity Bundle: Good
- GCompris activities aren't working well right now, so I installed implode from the web, which worked fine
- I installed Watch and Listen 10 from a usb key, which was a bit slow, but worked fine.
- Installing a library bundle: Broken
- The downloaded files are still going in /home/olpc/Library, which the index in browse is no longer using. (this was a change made to comply with rainbow)
- Playing an .ogg file in Browse: Good
- Transfer files to USB stick: Good
- again, mime type issues with record still.
- Collaboration with Chat: Good
Build 641 (first Ship2 candidate)
Wireless update
- 5.110.20.p4 is on 7 machines that will continue to run all weekend. These machines have HW ECOs, and have removed ohm (rpm -e ohm) since any chance of suspend/resume was causing problems (which continued to plague us during reboot, for instance). They looked good after removing ohm.
- Another suspend/resume issue is that if you hit the power button on the front of the laptop with or without the power adapter plugged in you could get into a very bad state. trac 5074
- I was not successful sharing a Write doc across 3 laptops with both text and an image (I didn't try an image alone). This failed in both link local and medialab AP with jabber modes. Most likely the link local problem was a crash in presence. Not sure what the jabber problem is -- Yani tried it again on the same machines and it did share... something intermittent??
- kim
- On a C1 I had to touch /etc/ohm/inhibit-suspend in order to keep wireless up when the machine was unplugged.
- I failed to connect to the network at a Marriott Courtyard without killing NetworkManager and manually configuring.
- cscott
- Anything earlier than C2 or laptops with all HW ECOs will require inhibit-suspend. Even with inhibit-suspend, if you hit the 'power' button on the front - you can get strange suspend behavior (5074, above). This is why I have removed ohm.
- I had a VERY difficult time with the tracpad on one of my C2 laptops after upgrading to q2d04l.rom. It jumped to the lower right corner nearly every time it sensed a new tap; which immediately brings up the sugar frame and causes much frustration. I now understand when people complain about this when it is at it worst.
- I rebooted, I did the 4 finger salut, and a couple of us tried using it for about 30 minutes. Then I downgraded the OFW and it worked well again. I rebooted a few times and it always came up working well. Then I put the q2d04l.rom OFW back on ... and it still works well. I've rebooted a few times and it still works well. I'm confident that we will get some laptops returned because of this problem. Need to get to root cause.

Joyride Builds
Build Joyride 1537
Smoke test results
Tested on a MP machine (clean installed) with firmware Q2D08a.
- could not set the timezone using sugar-control-panel command #5819.
- had to manually loadkeys to get the correct Spanish key map in the console.
- sharing activities only worked within the same build.
- sudoku.activity.xo was still claimed by etoys; couldn't be installed from Browse either.
- had to manually load the content bundle (#5840); clicking on the .xol file from Browse did not make the library content accessible from Browse.
- Journal had trouble showing the USB icon when a USB drive was plugged in. (
The USB drive could be accessed from the console.Although commands like cp could be run in the console to "copy" the files to the USB drive, once the USB drive was unplugged, the files were NOT in the USB drive.) - Browse could not open items in the USB drive that were created by another XO: videos, images, urls.
- olpc-netstatus error #5925
- not tested: filling up the journal
Build Joyride 1520
Smoke test results
Tested on a B4 system with a clean install to 1516 (Autoreinstallation + square button cheat code) then olpc-update to reach 1520.
- Could not test Installing an Activity Bundle from the web due to known IPv6 issues with laptop.org
- Could not test Installing a library bundle due to known IPv6 issues with laptop.org
- Wireless was very broken in 1516 but seems to be working well now, but I suspect establishing the initial connection to the mesh is not quite as reliable as ship2.2 (needs further testing)
- Issues encountered:
- #5909 html form text input area less obvious in joyride
- #5925 olpc-netstatus "substring expression < 0" error (regression over ship2.2)
- As a first-time joyride user the whole experience is much nicer than ship2.2

Build Joyride 1489
1 Hour Smoke Test Results
Tested with 3 machines:
- Machine 1: olpc-update --usb from build 653
- Machine 2: olpc-update (net) from build 653
- Machine 3: clean install (usb)
1. testing connection types
This occurred on all 3 machines:
- all machines were connected to the school server, but when running olpc-netstatus, the following appeared
/usr/bin/olpc-netstatus: line 47: ifconfig: command not found /usr/bin/olpc-netstatus: line 55: ifconfig: command not found /usr/bin/olpc-netstatus: line 117: iwconfig: command not found /usr/bin/olpc-netstatus: line 37: iwconfig: command not found /usr/bin/olpc-netstatus: line 37: iwconfig: command not found
==> (KQ) please add a bug since this worked fine before security was turned on. ==> #5846 --chihyu
2. network test
This only occurred 4 out of 5 trials on Machine 3 -- perhaps RF was weak or interfered?
- after booting up, the machine tried to connect to mesh network (channels 1, 6, and 11) but failed, and ended up not connected to any access point.
==> (KQ) There are 2 bugs here; they might both be in trac already: 1) not able to connect to school server consistently; 2) losing WLAN circle after inability to connect to anything. ==> #5847, #5848 --chihyu
3. loading content bundle
This occurred on all 3 machines:
- bible-en.xol could be downloaded, and the entry showed up in the left column when launching Browse
- when clicking on the net bible, the browser showed
File Not Found The file /home/olpc/Library/bible-en/bundle_index.html cannot be found. Please check the location and try again.
- wonder if there will be new bundle for joyride builds; see bug #5840 for details
4. Implode activity
Machine 3 worked fine. This occurred on Machine 1 and Machine 2:
- the Implode icon was flashing in the donut for about 1 minute, and disappeared automatically. never able to play the game.
==> (KQ) This looks like a bug due to a difference between a cleaninstall and an upgrade. If it occurs with other activities, it is a serious bug. ==> #5851 --chihyu
5. playing .ogg files
- local .ogg files: choppy on Machine 1 and Machine 2, no problem on Machine 3
- online .ogg files: stuck on Machine 1 (only played for 1 sec), choppy on Machine 2, no problem on Machine 3
==> (KQ) Another difference between upgraded versus cleaninstall machines?? Please add a bug. ==> #5852 --chihyu
6. suspend/resume due to cover close
This only occurred 3 out of 5 trials on Machine 3:
- after re-opening the laptop, could wake up the machine by pressing the mouse button, but the cursor wouldn't move
- had to reboot to resolve the problem
==> (KQ) Need many more suspend/resume test cases and please write up bugs for everything. Please include whether the laptop is MP (all HW changes).
7. Filling up the Journal
has NOT been tested
Build Joyride 1408
1 Hour Smoke Test Results
- Record doesn't load (permissions problem) trac ticket 5448
- Library Pages didn't install properly
- All other tests went fine.
Build Joyride 1395
No activities launch
- Some activities launch fine, but several (e.g. Browse, Record) are not working, due to known missing Sugar libs. Ben 15:38, 10 December 2007 (EST)
Build Joyride 1372
1 Hour Smoke Test
- Wireless
- Insecure: Good
- WEP: Good
- WPA: Good
- WPA2: Broken
- Mesh and Collab: Untested
All other tests passed.
Build Joyride 348 - 357
WIRELESS BROKEN
- as of joyride 348, a new wireless firmware was put in, which is broken
