with a mazy motion

making 'maze' into a screensaver or something that can run at startup would be neat... I've been thinking of ways to have preloader activities/games for activities with long load times. not sure how to implement for a few months yet, though. --Sj leave me a message 02:49, 13 January 2008 (EST)

Re Talk:Speak#Accessibility

I outlined a few more things there that you might be able to achieve far better than I. Another thing that I think we might find a way to optionally turn off is the initial greeting, especially for use in this circumstance. --Neskaya 21:28, 14 February 2008 (EST)

Thanks my code was backwards...

Forwards, backwards, oops. Thanks CharlesMerriam 03:05, 7 March 2008 (EST)

Adding languages to Speak activity

Speak broken in joyride due to numpy move -FIXED

Hi jminor,

In case you get to fix this before I do, in the latest joyride (I'm running -2271) Speak is broken because numpy's been removed in favor of numeric:

/home/olpc/Activities/Speak.activity/activity.py in <module>()
     54 import glasses
     55 import mouth
---> 56 import fft_mouth
        global fft_mouth = undefined
     57 import waveform_mouth
     58 import voice

/home/olpc/Activities/Speak.activity/fft_mouth.py in <module>()
     25 from mouth import *
     26
---> 27 from Numeric import ceil
        global Numeric = undefined
        global ceil = undefined
     28 from FFT import *
     29

ImportError: No module named Numeric

All fixed now (Trac #7852) .

Want to add Nepali language in Espeak.Help me out!!

Hi, I'm working for OLE Nepal.Currently I'm working on speak and I want to add Nepali language on speak. Please help me.

We have already added the Nepali Language in espeak which, as far as I know, speak is based on. How long do you think it will be before these changes are incorporated in the Speak activity. 120.89.117.55 08:49, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

If you've added it to espeak, then it should appear automatically in Speak. Do you see the new language listed when you type "espeak --voices" into the Terminal? jminor

The Nepali language is currently present in the latest version of espeak v1.39.15. It had been part of espeak for about a week. I currently have the latest Speak (v.9) in the XO but cannot see the Nepali language there. How do I sort of 'merge' these changes in espeak with speak?. My objective is to make the Speak activity speak in Nepali. Thank you. Pradosh

Speak asks espeak which languages it supports by running "espeak --voices" so if you have the new espeak installed on your XO, then Speak should notice it automatically. You can do this on your machine for testing by just adding the new language files to /usr/share/espeak-data/ and /usr/share/espeak-data/voices/. There is an explanation for how this was done for the Mohawk language here: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Image:Adding_mohawk_Speak_activity.zip

espeak is included in the base operating system release, not as part of the Speak activity, so if you want the new version released for everyone you should contact devel@lists.laptop.org to get guidance on how the latest version can be included in upcoming releases of Sugar. jminor

Thank you!

Just wanted to share some other work which was built on the shoulders of giants like you - see today's OLPCNews.com for the article on Free Icon-To-Speech. Thank you so much for Speak!! --RMattB 06:06, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Icon-To-Speech is awesome! It feels great to know that a little time spent programming can help folks in such a meaningful way. Keep up the good work! jminor 07:42, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Vandalism thanks

Thank you for helping monitor the speak page! --Sj talk 07:18, 17 December 2008 (UTC) Sure thing :) jminor 07:23, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
