  • Teachers - 1 class's teachers - 3 laptops
  • Students - 1 class's kids - 30 laptops
  • In-class spares - 1 class's worth - 2 laptops
  • Teachers support - to use by teachers to create/test lessons during the project - 15 laptops
• This is a total of 50 laptops

Objectives

Project Objectives:

Concrete proposals with defined, measurable outcomes are much more likely to result in a laptop than "it would be cool to play with these and demo them".

To ignite educator, press, developer and corporate support of OLPC here in the UK.

Our aim is to identify an interested school and integrate the XO into the teaching process to demonstrate the value every child would gain from having a laptop.

The pilot will enable OLPC UK to effectively demonstrate the community benefit gained from the program to corporate entities and other potential supporters, the media and to educators.

Plan of Action

Plan and Procedure for Achieving the Stated Objectives:

All ground work has been completed; schools are ready for the pilot, with interested teachers keen to make use of the XO in classroom ASAP – all we need now is the XO’s and to get started.

We have prepared:

• Pilot School and Supportive teachers • Lesson Plan • Teacher Training • Infrastructure

Still a work in progress:

• PR and Marketing Plan Creation

July 2009 – PR and Marketing Plan Finalised August 2009 – Teacher Training and Curriculum finalization September 2009 – Pilot Launch December 2009 – Initial Pilot Assesment March 2009 – Second Pilot Assesment June 2009 – Third Pilot Assesment September 2010 – End of Pilot & Final Assesment

Needs

Why is this project needed? Locally? In the greater OLPC/Sugar community? Outside the community? Why can't this project be done in emulation using non-XO machines? Why are you requesting the number of machines you are asking for? Will you consider (1) salvaged/rebuilt or (2) damaged XO Laptops?

To ensure pilot success we need sufficient laptops for a full class of 35 and 15 laptops to form a library for interested teachers in the school (to assist in preparing teachers for the next phase of OLPC UK, full school deployment) and to cover damaged and malfunctioning XO’s

The value of this project to OLPC is significant because it:

• Is the first attempt to create an OLPC organization in the UK

• Will generate valuable fundraising and publicity opportunities for OLPC and OLPC UK.

• Precedes a variety of domestic and international projects OLPC UK will be able to promote and market using the pilot success

To ensure pilot success we need sufficient laptops for a full class of 50 laptops to ensure that: • Every pilot class student has a laptop

• Every teacher involved int he pilot class has a laptop

• The IT deparment at the school has one

• That sufficient XO’s are available to cover damaged units

• That sufficient XO’s are available that interest and knowledge of the XO and OLPC is generated among other teachers at the school

Progress will be reviewed monthly throughout the program, and the details of those reviews will be updated to OLPC and OLPC UK by email and the above wiki page. Formal quarterly reviews with school staff will also be conducted on the success of the pilot and issues and improvements that are identified.

Quality/Mentoring

Would your Project benefit from Support, Documentation and/or Testing people? Teachers' input into Usability? How will you promote your work? • Management – with Warren Pimm’s exceptional pedigree managing IT programs within education organisations we have the knowledge to manage the program
• Technical – Both Martin Dengler and Peter Robinson have significant experience both with the XO and generally in such projects and will be able to professionally manage the deployment
• Education – We have engaged a variety of teaching staff interested in contributing to the curriculum development and assisting the school in maximizing the pilot benefits
