<profJoan> taking a class in the spring. 5 cs students and 2 child advocacy students will work to develop
<profJoan> activities to address needs of children in rural, poor county of missouri.
<CanoeBerry> When you say activities, do you mean Sugar Activities?
<profJoan> As for mentoring, the 2 cs profs have experience leading dvlp projects, but are new
<profJoan> to olpc. yes, sugar activities.
<CanoeBerry> PS Angela's email address came back as "non-exitent" -- no worries but you might want to check into this.
<profJoan> ok. she is a fac. member at WSU in the child advocacy program.
<CanoeBerry> Great, have you read James Simmons' book on creating Sugar Activities?
<profJoan> not yet completely; we have played with the emulator a bit and have all of this on the reading list for the class. we
* CRS  has joined #olpc-meeting

<CanoeBerry> profJoan: what are your immediate needs & next steps?
<profJoan> The class starts in Jan. We are asking for 5 laptops for development for our class. We are traveling to
<profJoan> Missouri the fsecond week of class to meet with the clients there. We plan on doing usability studies in the summer with
<CanoeBerry> I'm in agreement -- you're aware XO-1 laptops (from 2008) are all we have in stock at the moment, yes?
<CanoeBerry> Sorry XO-1.5s are not currently in inventory.
<profJoan> children in mn and in mo., so we want to have fully tested our implementations before then.

<Deepa> In support

<CanoeBerry> profJoan: what is your XO experience?
<profJoan> XO experience: have played around with one; have downloaded emulator and played with that a little.
<CanoeBerry> I vote in favor of 2-to-5 XO-1 units, once I understand more how each will be used -- and the Sugar/XO experience of different members of the group.
<CanoeBerry> Calling once..
<CanoeBerry> Calling twice..
<CanoeBerry> Calling thrice..

<CanoeBerry> Requests 10-14 XOs over 12-24 months
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> www.garala.org to know more details about our project. We are trying to
<CanoeBerry> enhance and provide the ability for school going rural kids in India
<CanoeBerry> to have
<CanoeBerry> access to information beyond their regular school.
* SisAnne Quit (Quit: CGI:IRC (EOF))
<CanoeBerry> Do we have an advocate from Garala or otherwise, to introduce this project/application?
<CanoeBerry> Hello?
<Deepa> hi
<sivaprasad> Hi.. this is Siva
<CanoeBerry> Please go ahead, thanks!
<sivaprasad> Most of the rural schools in India has very poor facilities to learn. We would like to empower these kids by providing the right tools where they can learn and teach others .. either it be books or laptops.
<CanoeBerry> Where in India?
<sivaprasad> We are starting in southern India "Chittoor" as the first place. We want to expand as we progress
<sivaprasad> to other places as well.
<CanoeBerry> Are you in touch with other India volunteers working on XOs and Sugar?
* cliftonz  has joined #olpc-meeting
<sivaprasad> Our target is rural and not cities
<CanoeBerry> And/or the strong India representation around http://olpcSF.org? (San Francisco / Silicon Valley)
<sivaprasad> Can you please provide references to get in touch with them
* profJoan  Quit (Quit: CGI:IRC)
<kevix> GrannieB2: testing?
<CanoeBerry> Do you have people in Silicon Valley?
<CanoeBerry> And how many?
<sivaprasad> Yes.
<sivaprasad> We have total of 4 voluntters in SFO area
<CanoeBerry> Perfect.
<sivaprasad> We are planning to grow, and can expect mroe volunteers joining
<CanoeBerry> Please meet Sameer Verma in person during his amazing monthly meetings: http://olpcSF.org
<sivaprasad> the cause
<CanoeBerry> IN SF
<sivaprasad> Thank you. Will surely get in touch with Sameer
<kevix> enhance=internet access, new translated content in e-book form, or ...
<CanoeBerry> http://www.linkedin.com/in/sameerverma
<CanoeBerry> http://twitter.com/sameerverma
<kevix> CanoeBerry: GrannieB2 is having irc issues
<sivaprasad> Thanks for the contact information of Sameer. Will stop by at SFSU and meet him
<CanoeBerry> OK: now let's see if we can provide a preliminary verdict, even if Sameer's group should help later in January provide the full rallying support to kickstart this community if we give approval today.
<CanoeBerry> What does everyone think of this library approach?
<CanoeBerry> http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=72384
<CanoeBerry> In what ways will http://garala.org support the sustainability of this work, and support http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OLPC:Five_principles ?
<GrannieB2> Which proposal are we on? I was lost in the other "room"
<talat> Carolruth and talat vote yes
<CanoeBerry> GrannieB2: full proposal RT72384 just 3 lines up (Project #3)
<kevix> GrannieB2: oh, welcome back
<sivaprasad> We will help reach OLPC all the goals. Our taget is children's library
<CanoeBerry> Libraries are in tension with OLPC's goal of "child ownership"
<CanoeBerry> See OLPC Principle #1 above.
<sivaprasad> We will provide laptops for kids primarily, targeting 3 to 12 years.
<CanoeBerry> We need to resolve this tension by understanding how your library will build wider community -- gLocally.
<CanoeBerry> gLocally = in-person in Chittoor / Bangalore district and alos online with a blog! (or similar :)
<sivaprasad> Ultimate users would be kids. We do not have lot of XO's, so we are facilitate sharing among the kids.
<CanoeBerry> How will Garala's Laptop-Lending library work in practise?
<sivaprasad> We are lending library targeting children. We lend books as well as XO's.
<GrannieB2> Do you already have some XOs? "We do not have a lot of XOs" If so, how many and what have you done with them?
<sivaprasad> No. we do not have any.
<CanoeBerry> Please provide answers to the 11 questions at the bottom of: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Contributors_program_criteria
<CanoeBerry> "Proposed criteria for starting a Local Laptop Lending Library (LLLL!) L4"
<sivaprasad> www.garala.org
<sivaprasad> Kids can come to the library and take it for a week and return it. At that point of time, another kid will get the opportunity to use the XO for another week.
<CanoeBerry> 1 week, ok
<sivaprasad> This will help maximize the usage of the XO's
<CanoeBerry> Kids have electricity at home?
<sivaprasad> Yes.
<CanoeBerry> OK
<CanoeBerry> I support this project, but feel it needs full support from Sameer's SF group before I can ship.
<sivaprasad> We will contribute back to the ultimate goal of OLPC "Reaching maximum number of kids"
<CanoeBerry> Input from others?
<sivaprasad> I will get in touch with Sameer in the next week after Christmas.
<CanoeBerry> Let us conclude Project #3's initial review here -- a beautiful initiative that needs answers to all 11 questions above before final approval.
<CanoeBerry> Callin once..
<GrannieB2> This could be a good project, but I think they might do well to resubmit with the answers to the questions in the L4 criteria. It will require thought that will make it a better project
<CanoeBerry> Calling twice..
<CanoeBerry> Calling thrice..
<GrannieB2> -1 for now. Resubmit. I like it
<Deepa> in support
<CanoeBerry> CONCLUSION: We love this project. But it needs clarifying answers to all 11 questions above. Sameer Verma in SF will help this wonderful-sounding group get organized, so shipping can hopefull happen later in January 2011.
...
<sivaprasad> GrannieB2, can we get mentoring from you as well.
...
<GrannieB2> sivaprasad: which project? Adam: "See" you in a couple of weeks? The Map Sprint will be going on next week so I assume there will not be a CP meeting
<sivaprasad> Garala.org
...
<sivaprasad> GrannieB2: XO lending library - www.garala.org
<CanoeBerry> sivaprasad: please have a specific libary page/link (or blog ideally!) ready for Sameer and our followup CP meeting in Jan, thanks :)
<GrannieB2> Great. Thanks. I'll send my contact info today.
<sivaprasad> Thanks all. Will get in touch with necessary folks and resubmit.

<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects ]
<CanoeBerry> Requests 2 XOs over undetermined months
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> To continue to create well-tested and well-designed
<CanoeBerry> activities. Currently I create activities than contain no text so
<CanoeBerry> they are
<CanoeBerry> truly international. I also aim for the simplest possible user
<CanoeBerry> interface.
* Green-Azure-07  has joined #olpc-meeting
<CanoeBerry> +1 for 1 XO-1 if not perhaps 2 XO-1s -- others opinions?
<CanoeBerry> Quick!
<cliftonz> +1 here.
<GrannieB2> +1
<talat> talat +1
<GrannieB2> Good question... why 2?
<Aryaman> +1
<CanoeBerry> GrannieB2: good question -- what he asked for.
<CanoeBerry> APPROVED: final XO count will be negotiated -- either 1 or 2 -- prior to shipping.

[ PROJECT #5 - lessed Children Centre - Nairobi, Kenya ]

<CanoeBerry> Onto Project #5 -- please all critique/mentor/vote for:
<cliftonz> Are any of the proposed activities going to be utilizing networking? That would be my guess for the 2 XOs.
<CanoeBerry> Perhaps :)
<CanoeBerry> Blessed Children Centre - Nairobi, Kenya
<CanoeBerry> http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=72466
<CanoeBerry> [SPECIFIC SITE NEEDS TO BE POSTED OFF
<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects ]
<CanoeBerry> Requests 50 XOs over undetermined months
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> The main objective of the project is to enlighten the needy in the
<CanoeBerry> society on
<CanoeBerry> education, professionally, socially, spiritually and empower them to
<CanoeBerry> become self
<CanoeBerry> sustainable.
<CanoeBerry> Other Objectives
<CanoeBerry> • To establish a support centre that will help improve the living
<CanoeBerry> standards of
<CanoeBerry> the less fortunate child .
<CanoeBerry> • To establish a residence that will facilitate offering formal
<CanoeBerry> education to the
<CanoeBerry> child in improving their present and future living conditions .
<CanoeBerry> • To establish support centre that will be sustainable in future by
<CanoeBerry> incorporating
<CanoeBerry> income generating project .And up coming technology
<CanoeBerry> -1 sorry this project is not aligned with OLPC's approach, nor does it appear very aware of http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OLPC:Five_principles
<CanoeBerry> other votes?
<GrannieB2> This is not appropriate for the CP. Too many machines. We really need to change the picture on the CP page. It results in false expectations and disappointment.
<cliftonz> Form what I gather on the project, I completely agree with you. -1
<GrannieB2> -1
<CanoeBerry> 50 is also well above our standard "starter kit" of 2 XOs.
<CanoeBerry> Objections?
<CanoeBerry> Calling once..
<CanoeBerry> Calling twice..
<CanoeBerry> Calling thrice..
<talat> Talat and Carol Ruth -1
<CanoeBerry> ON HOLD. Project needs major refinement if this group wants to work with the OLPC/Sugar community. Revised submissions most welcome if that later emerge.

[ PROJECT #6 - Rehnuma Public School Karachi – Pakistan ]

<CanoeBerry> Onto Project #6 - please all critique/mentor/vote for:
<CanoeBerry> Rehnuma Public School Karachi – Pakistan
<CanoeBerry> http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=72490
<CanoeBerry> [SPECIFIC SITE NEEDS TO BE POSTED OFF
<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects ]
<CanoeBerry> Requests 10 XOs over undetermined months
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives: (excerpt)
<CanoeBerry> Each trio of three students will receive a single grade on their
<CanoeBerry> progress and completion. A final exam of all material covered will be
<CanoeBerry> administered to the students individually, which will indicate their
<CanoeBerry> personal level of achievement and understanding of the projects, and
<CanoeBerry> will be recorded for the program.
<CanoeBerry> Documentation of student progress will be recorded and used as a tool to
<CanoeBerry> help the Teachers improve the grade level curriculum and maximize the
<CanoeBerry> student’s learning potential.
<CanoeBerry> talat & carolruth: can you introduce our work?
<talat> talat is here and carol ruth is here
<carolruth> We specified 18 months.
<GrannieB2> This is basically educationally sound. However I do have some concerns about "labeling" kids. They will figure out what is going on and some students with very different talents may suffer from the labeling
* Green-Azure-07  Quit (Quit: CGI:IRC (EOF))
<carolruth> Our project is for Karachi Pakistan, for a slum school.
<carolruth> The school is supported by ex-pats, not a government school.
<carolruth> The proposal is for 10 laptops, which will be assigned to approx 28 stucehts, in trios. On XO to the teacher, one to the tech.
<CanoeBerry> GrannieB2: can you explain more?
<GrannieB2> I would suggest they rotate the groups with each assignment. That way the group dynamics will not be frozen in stone. The ADHD low achieving student may turn out to the the best in the group!
<carolruth> The labeling problem: not so mucyh, because teachers will choose kids.
<carolruth> each trio, hopefully, with a range of high, middle & low achievers.
<GrannieB2> I have worked with students in this fashion. You have to be especially careful, especially where they are being "graded"
<carolruth> This is not essential to project.
<GrannieB2> The kids will figure out what is going on. It is a good way to work but you have to be very careful
<carolruth> Note: we asked for XO 1.5, and would like shiny new, but refurg XO-1 = OK.
<cliftonz> Small point. But if you have 28 students in trios that would be 9 XOs with 1 extra kid. Then one XO for the teacher and One for the tech. That would be 11 XOs right? Were the teacher and tech sharing. Small and non crucial point...
<CanoeBerry> talat & carolruth: Can your review your blogging strategy required of all 10-XO CP projects?
<talat> Carol the number of students are 22 and not 28
<cliftonz> ah, ok
<carolruth> Blog: has already been started, and will be a big part of our effort here --
<CanoeBerry> URL handy?
<carolruth> we are looking for it, sorry we did not copy it for ready access.
<CanoeBerry> http://patheducation.org is useful, but doesn't appear to be a blog.
<carolruth> Yes, that's the web site for the school, but there is also a blog address. Talat is trying to find it. Sorry that we are not real ... may I say, geeks?
<CanoeBerry> PS for those who love quotations, PathEducation.org is a fountain of memorable quotes on top of each page -- keep clicking RELOAD :)
* talat Quit (Quit: CGI:IRC (EOF))
<CanoeBerry> (Education Quotes..)
<GrannieB2> Yes, great quotes
<carolruth> here it is, I think: http://olpckarachipakistan.wordpress.com
<CanoeBerry> Great!
<CanoeBerry> How shall we conclude?
<CanoeBerry> GrannieB2: suggestions?
<carolruth> Sameer has offered to mentor, also.
<GrannieB2> +1, but I would like to help mentor
* talat  has joined #olpc-meeting
<carolruth> great: more help, better. Email Talat.
<carolruth> Can we vote for our own project? Or is that a conflict?
<GrannieB2> Is his email info on the blog or website?
<cliftonz> +1
<GrannieB2> yes... absolutely! You can vote for your project.
<talat> http://olpckarachipakistan.wordpress.com/ this is blog
<CanoeBerry> carolruth: if you vote against your own project, we have doctors we can refer you to ;)
<CanoeBerry> +1 if GrannieB2 mentors
* Aryaman Quit (Quit: CGI:IRC (EOF))
<talat> my email address is XXXXXXXX@yahoo.com
<carolruth> So +1
<CanoeBerry> Final thoughts?
* newnick  has joined #olpc-meeting

<CanoeBerry> But I do hope all approved projects from December will ship (and possibly even arrive) this month.
<GrannieB2> When will we have our next meeting? I would like to help Alyssa get her proposal ready. School starts in Guatamala next month
<carolruth> This month = Dec?? or Jan?
<CanoeBerry> This month = this month, look at your calendar :) Customs is another story of course. OLPC is extremely generous trying to prepay shipping in the case of Contributor Program projects alone, but cannot help when multi-month delays arise due to customs particulars -- a risk that occurs in all countries.
<talat> Granbnib2 could you please let us know how to get in touch with you/?
<CanoeBerry> talat: definitely
<CanoeBerry> GrannieB2 will contact you by email.
<carolruth> Adam, thanks so very much. We will prepare tyhe school for receipt.
