11.2.0 is the project previously known as "F14 for XO", now formalized into an official OLPC OS release. The full release plan is available at 11.2.0/Release plan.

Summary

11.2.0 is an OLPC OS release based on core system updates to Fedora 14, Linux 2.6.35, Sugar 0.92 and GNOME 2.32, planned to be released in June 2011. The target platforms are Target platforms::XO-1, Target platforms::XO-1.5, and XO-1.5 High School Edition.

Known issues in development/testing releases

The (draft) Release notes/11.2.0 page describes limitations and issues that we anticipate will be present in the final release. In addition, as we are still in development, so we're still encountering serious issues here and there that we'll fix as we move towards release. Those cases are documented here.

os21: XO-1.5 wireless card reset bug

<trac>10944</trac>: In build 21, a minor kernel bug causes the wireless card to be reset during every resume, destroying any established connections. Fixed in build 22

os20 and os21: olpc-update broken

<trac>10942</trac>: If using olpc-update from os20 or os21 to another image, things will fail badly due to a misconfigured /versions/running symlink. It will delete the current version (perhaps rendering the system unusable on reboot) and then fail to update with a strange error regarding the /versions/contents directory. Fixed in build 22, but you will have to reflash to install this new version - sorry!

XO-1 JFFS2 olpc-update to os20 broken

<trac>10929</trac>: If starting with an older release that used the JFFS2 filesystem (e.g. 10.1.3, 8.2.1) and using olpc-update to update to 11.2.0 build 20, you will find that it works fine during first boot, but then fails to boot the second time (and onwards). You'll have to reflash to recover from this, sorry. Fixed in build 21.

Download

Development builds are available here:

New builds are announced on the devel mailing list.

XO-1.5

To install from Open Firmware on an unlocked XO-1.5, download a .zd file to a USB drive. Choose the correct one: there are several. Files which end in .zd2 are for 2GB media and .zd4 is for 4GB media.

Insert the USB drive into the XO-1.5, get to the Ok prompt and type:

fs-update u:\osXX.zdN

Where osXX.zdN is the file you downloaded, for example os10.zd4.

There shouldn't be any XX in what you type.

XO-1

To install from Open Firmware on an unlocked XO-1, download the .onu and .uim files to the root directory of a USB drive. Plug in the drive, start the XO and go into Open Firmware. Run the command:

update-nand u:\osXX.onu

where the file name is whatever you downloaded, such as os22.onu, In this case XX gets replaced by 22.

Do not use the "copy-nand" command (used with previous OS releases) for this task. Using the copy-nand command may appear to initially work, but booting your XO will fail when the first dot appears. If this occurs and does not resolve itself within 60 seconds, use the "update-nand" command line shown above to properly fully re-image your XO-1.

Upgrading with olpc-update

To install the latest 11.2.0 using olpc-update, you can run:

XO-1:

sudo olpc-update 11.2.0_xo1-XX

XO-1.5:

sudo olpc-update 11.2.0_xo1.5-XX

In both cases, "XX" must be substituted with the build number you wish to install (e.g. 14). See http://build.laptop.org/11.2.0 for the list.

Developers

The release is being built with Build system::OS Builder version Build system version::3.0 (master) under Build platform::Fedora 14. The f14, f14-xo1 and f14-xo1.5 RPM dropboxes are used.

Bug reports

We are now looking for bug reports on all levels - system, Sugar, ...

Please file bugs at http://dev.laptop.org. Leave the milestone field blank but mention clearly that you are testing 11.2.0, your bug report will then be triaged into the appropriate place.

What happened to 11.1.x?

At the time of planning this release around Fedora 14 for XO-1 and XO-1.5, we are in the interesting situation where software development for the ARM-based XO-1.75 is restricted to developing around F12/F13. The 11.1.x space is therefore reserved for a F12/F13 release for XO-1.75. In the future, we hope to produce joint software releases for all 3 laptops.

This oddity is expected to be a one-off; as soon as Fedora/ARM reaches Fedora 14, XO-1.75 releases will be able to share the same base (and versioning) as XO-1/XO-1.5 releases.
