Storage used by Gnome and Sugar

An explanation of where the Sugar journal fits in the filesystem would be helpful. I'll descibe a specific problem to illistrate the need for this explanation. With Cheese not working in Gnome I've snapped a few photos with Record in Sugar. So now I wonder how the images can be accessed from Gnome. Are individual images in a directory in /home/olpc? Is the content of Journal in a database where I won't recognize a jpg or png image? There will be similar questions from anyone using both Gnome and Sugar and the topic needs attention.
