Project description
The idea
Some people are "notable enough" to warrant article pages on Wikipedia. Others... aren't. We're all "notable people" to our families, though. And it would be great to have a worldwide resource for keeping track of families and lineages - whom begat whom who begat whom and whom and whom, and who immigrated to where and married who and had which kids.
What if we had a wiki family tree that anyone could be in or contribute to? One page per person, with a short public biography and links to family groups and family members (post your geneaology online). Ideally, there would also be a way to browse the wiki visually and display your actual family tree, as taken from the wiki. It would start out as several families putting their family tree on the web independently, but could eventually grow to the point where people could actually discover relatives they didn't know they had by looking at the website.
This project could be undertaken by several teams simultaneously. It would be especially neat if the teams were families. The end deliverable would be a complete family tree for the family involved, along with a guide that could be sent out to other families with information on how to get involved.
Issues
How do we deal with privacy? I think of this as having a wikipedia-esque page on everybody that wants one... you would include the same information about the person as you would include in an encyclopedia article, so things like private/personal and contact details wouldn't be included, and a person could always lock their own page from editing.
