XO Architecture is a kind of research activity to port XO onto all hardwares, softwares, and other infrastuctures of a society/region.

This idea is now implemented in the jejudo Island of Korea; 500,000 population and 1,848.3㎢ area. See Jejudo Location for details. The source of statistical data is Jeju Statistics Office.

Our estimate of cost savings (or economic benefits) from SUGARizing Jejudo is about USD$ 5 billion per year.

Economic Benefits of Sugarization

Computers

At the end of 2006, there are about 400,000 personal or server computers operating in Jejudo, almost all of them oeprating on MS Windows and related softwares. OLPC Korea is to subsitite them with XO(or XO variants) and open source softwares, which will result in USD$ 100-150 million savings per year from reduced hardwares, softwares, and power consumption expenses.

Communications

At the end of 2006, there are about 200,000 families, 500,000 mobile phones, and 250,000 fixed/wired phones, 119 communication offices with 1,489 employees in Jejudo. OLPC Korea is to substitute those wire/wireless phones with XO WiFi Phones, which will result in USD$ 400 million savings from reduced hardwares, softwares, and communication expenses. At the end of 2006, the average monthly communication expense of families was US$ 150.

Government on XO

There are about 5000 governmental employees in Jejudo at the end of 2006. By providing governmental services via XO laptops, OLPC Korea estimates about 70% of current governmental employees can be reduced, resulting in about USD$ 500 million savings from reduced labor & related ordinary costs.

Bank & Insurance on XO

There are about 552 bank or insurance offices with 8,346 employees in Jejudo at the end of 2006. By providing financial services via XO laptops, OLPC Korea estimates about 70% of financial employees can be reduced, resulting in about USD$ 800 million savings from reduced labor & related ordinary costs.

Education on XO

There are about 1,689 educational facilities with 14,561 employees in Jejudo at the end of 2006. By providing educational services via XO laptops, OLPC Korea estimates about 70% of educational employees can be subsituted with retired professions or volunteers, resulting in about USD$ 1.5 billion savings from reduced labor & related ordinary costs.

Market on XO

There are about 111,556 shops with 30,788 employees in Jejudo at the end of 2006. By providing sales or market services via XO laptops, OLPC Korea estimates about 50% of current sales/market employees can be subsituted with automated e-Commerce system, resulting in about USD$ 2 billion savings from reduced labor & related ordinary costs.

Welfare on XO

There are about 1,084 social welfare offices with 9,023 employees in Jejudo at the end of 2006. By providing welfare services via XO laptops and social volunteers, OLPC Korea estimates about 50% of current welfare employees can be subsituted with automated welfare system, resulting in about USD$ 150-200 million savings from reduced labor & related ordinary costs.

New Opportunities on XO

Because most of office works can be restructured via XO Architecture, there will be more surplus human resources after Sugarization.
