Unfortunately, I have not noticed any activity on the Localization list (or in the Pootle server) generated from OLPCorps. It would be a great shame if native speakers with Sugar interface experience were not tapped to perform localization of the Sugar Interface for the future benefit of others in their local language groups. It would probably be most effective if OLPC were to strongly encourage and facilitate Sugar localization efforts by these groups as part of their participation. Some thoughts on revisiting / triaging the first summer of OLPCorps:

  • Invite Ethan Zuck. and others with long experience in similar programs for students and volunteers to a day-long meeting to talk about good and bad; prep and surprises; feedback and recruiting; metrics for success.
  • Gather ideas in writing and photos from all teams before the in-person meeting; with time to organize and share an overview back with them.
  • Have a scribe/historian present at the weekend meeting to capture the outcome and process of the event.
  • Develop a handbook for teams, and for organizers, over the coming two months before/after the weekend. Find interested members of this year's teams who want to take on roles in structuring future programs.
