Room to Read (R2R) currently operates in seven countries: Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and South Africa. The South Africa project is new as of this year and represents R2R’s entry into Africa. R2R has a comprehensive approach to education that covers: building libraries (2,930), working with local language publishers (77 new titles created; 1.2 million English titles donated), building schools (197), distributing scholarships for girls to attend schools (2,079), and building language and computer labs (92). R2R does not publicly address issues of follow-up, although they do state that local, in-country staff regularly visits the programs to provide feedback. It is unclear if the in-country staff are providing follow-up training at that point, as well. Monitoring and Evaluation reports have indicated that follow-up training, particularly for computer rooms, is needed. In 2005 R2R had an external M&E report conducted. They have also recently hired a “Global Program Officer” who will be in charge of M&E for all programs. Currently, the results of both internal and external evaluations are used to determine the effectiveness of programs and how to make changes to current and future programs. R2R acknowledges that literacy rates are difficult to track because of external factors beyond their control. Instead, they monitor how much their services and programs are being used.
