Keyboard vocabulary

When an XO key is pressed, the key or character could be spoken aloud. This might make a nice activity, and a perhaps a resource for other activities. Creating it would require word lists describing the keyboards, recorded as with Shtooka Project. This page is for the creation of such word lists and audio sets.

OLPC keyboard layouts

Instructions for setting up keyboard switching in Terminal are on the Customizing NAND images page. On bilingual XOs, the multiplication/division key is replaced with a keyboard switching key.

Changing the language of the keyboard is independent of changing the language currently displayed. The language currently displayed can be changed by using the Language section of the Sugar Control Panel.

• Improve the word/phrase list above.
• Translate it into other languages. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punctuation in other languages may help.
• Look at the keyboard image of a language you know, and write down what the keys and characters are called.
• If you are a native speaker of some language, use something like Shtooka Project's Recorder software to record the word list. Simply recording a-z, for latin languages, would be a big help.
