LAPTOP NEWS 2007-04-07

1. “Game Jam” OLPC—un evento sobre diseño y programación de juegos orientado a promover el desarrollo de juegos open-source para la plataforma OLPC (la XO)—tendrá lugar este próximo fin de semana en el Olin College. Un grupo de desarrolladores de juegos se reunen durante tres días con el objetivo de hacer tantos juegos innovativos como sea posible para la laptop. “Nuestra meta no es solamente juegos geniales y experimentación sobre la XO sino también poder llevar la características únicas de éste proyecto y sus resultados al próximo Taller de Juegos Experimentales en la GDC del próximo año.” El código será publicado en SourceForge bajo la GNU General Public License para que todos puedan experimentar con el fuente y los juegos.

2. Mecánicas/DI: El diseño mecánico de la XO esta terminado. El último componente importante—las orejas en plástico moldeado—fue aprobado el 4 de Abril. El equipo responsable por este hito: Frank Lee y Victor Chau de Quanta, Yves Behar y Bret Recor de Fuse, Jacques Gagne de Gecko, y Mary Lou Jepsen de la OLPC. Esto es la culminación de casi dos años de esfuerzos en el Diseño Industrial y mecánicas. 3. Software del sistema: El Build 385 y firmware Q2B87 son el nuevo build estable. No anticipamos un nuevo build estable por unas 3–5 semanas aproximadamente, mientras trabajamos en suspender y resumir, administración de energía, y la incorporación del Geode LX. Por favor actualicen sus sistema a dicho build. Cambios y mejoras relevantes incluyen:

  • la corrección para una serie de crasheos en Sugar, que eran ocasionales hasta el Build 368 y que finalmente se localizó al bug en la biblioteca fontconfig;
  • actualización del contenido de la biblioteca;
  • mejoras en la interfaz para la selección de redes, y correcciones en el piloto de red;
  • corrección de los problemas con baterías LiFePo (este es el último error conocido de baterías);
  • el manejo de la clave WEP para la red debe funcionar mucho mejor;
  • actualización del paquete TamTam (graba y carga correctamente);
  • una nueva, y mejorada calculadora de Reinier Heeres;
  • una solución temporal a un problema con el servicio de presencia; y
  • suficientes aliases de viejas tipografías X11 para que la mayoria de las aplicaciones que no hayan sido actualizadas al actual modelo de tipografías del cliente-X puedan funcionar (específicamente, esto soluciona el crash del plug-in de Adobe Flash 9 para Linux).

Tendremos un script de respaldo automático (backup) antes del próximo build estable para backupear el contenido de la laptop al servidor escolar; esto es un simple comando rsync que ya se encuentra incluído en los builds actuales.

4. Firmware: Mitch Bradley ha completado las preparaciones para largar con el firmware de fastboot/suspend/resume. La serie Q2Cxx incluirá las siguientes caracteristicas:

  • soporte para suspender/resumir
  • memtest86 incluido en el firmware;
  • diagnóstico de teclado que muestra gráficamente las teclas presionadas;
  • ya no será necesario el uso explícito del probe-usb: cualquier intento de abrir el nodo USB manejará automáticamente los cambios en el estado de conexión;
  • nueva organización de la flash de booteo solicitado por Quanta, y herramientas para inspeccionar los datos de manufactura y guardarlos a disco; y
  • booteo más rápido.

Lilian Walters presentó a Mitch el código de auto-testeo del teclado y el auto-reprobe para USB/ Richard Smith realizó q2b86 y q2b87 con nuevos bits EC que solucionan los problemas pendientes de las baterías LiFe.

5. Administración de energía: Como fue mencionado arriba, estamos entrando en la serie “C” del firmware a medida que trabajamos sobre el desarrollo de suspender/resumir. Richard trabajó en un bug de resumir el SD junto a Pierre Ossman. Pareciera ser que despues de resumir, el reloj en el SD no queda bien. Arranca pero se va. Richard todavía esta cazandolo. Solo el SD no resume correctamente. El tiempo para resumir sin SD es de solo 0.23 segundos!

6. Kernel: Andres Salomon realizó el merge regular con Linux, unificó el piloto inalámbrico libertas a un tronco estable, y trabajó sobre un parche para el árbol-de-dispositivos open firmware (OFW) del kernel. Desafortunadamente, la instrumentación del árbol-de-dispositivos va a necesitar mucho cuidado-amor-cariño para lograr remontarlo hacia arriba. Dave Woodhouse detectó un bug latente en el sistema de archivos JFFS2 originado por un comportamiento bastante patológico de loggeo; requerirá trabajo el resolverlo. Jordan Crouse trabajó sobre el piloto del frame buffer del Geode LX (lxfb).

7. Ambiente de usuario: Jim Gettys develó como funcionaba el viejo sistema de tipografías de X, para permitir que las aplicaciones que lo usaban (ej: el plugin Flash 9 de Adobe) funcionaran correctamente en nuestro sistema. Chris Ball probó fontconfig-2.4.2, que Jim predijo correctamente solucionaría el problema en Sugar que se hizo evidente en el Build 368. Estabamos a punto de revertir el parche del firmware sobre branching predicitivo en su lugar. Tanto Chris Ball como Chris Blizzard han confirmado que el error desaparece en el Build 380. Chris también rastreó los scripts Unicode que causaban letras diminutas en la consola. John Palmieri lo resolvió, que ya se encuentra en el último build.

8. Servidor escolar: John Watlington reporta que tenemos un servidor escolar en funcionamiento como un portal para la malla en Cambridge. Hasta tres redes de malla son soportadas, con routeo entre ellas y la Internet.
