Mon interpretation... mainstreaming c'est faire quelque chose habituel, de tous les jours... something 'mainstream' is basically something that everybody knows about, or is aware of. For example everybody knows about the Seine & Paris, but how many know about the Aisne (a tributary to the Oise, itself a tributary of the Siene)? The internet existed long time before it became 'mainstream'... now everybody knows about it, you don't really have to explain what it is, its purpose, or use... (although not everybody really knows much about it ;)
