Negotiating a loan with a Development Bank for a full XO-XS deployment

  1. The rationale is that - when comparing a population NOT equipped with mobile phones or even better an XO-XS deployment, compared to a population/region that IS, the people in latter are much quicker at increasing their wealth that those with no access to data. Just imagine an agricultural family that all of a sudden can find out that the vaue of their crops is 5 times higher than what the "friend of the family", who comes buy up everything from the village every week, pretended there was an over supply and that the crops were worth next to nothing. Equipped with access to data, the families will find out very quickly and organize with the village to go sell the crops directly at the market 50 km further. This will translate in a leapfrog in their revenues, prosperities, investment power in new tools etc, and somewhere down the line, they will e.g. want a better connexion. These centralized and nation wide telecom operators e.g. are easy to tax for the government. So an XO-XS deployment results in additional tax revenues for the state. This can be used as a collateral / guarantee to obtain a loan from a Development Bank.
  2. ± 190 €/XO-XS.7 years average lifetime = 27 €/year.student . This price includes the portable flexible Photo Voltaic Panel. --SvenAERTS 14:23, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
  3. “Modest early-stage investments to ensure that each child attends school, remains in school and learns in school can yield significant economic returns. Indeed, using data from a “typical” Indian company, we have found that $1 invested in education today returns $53 in value to the employer at the start of a person’s working years.” As per http://www.brookings.edu/research/reports/2013/09/investment-in-global-education
  4. --SvenAERTS 14:23, 29 November 2013 (UTC) discussed the issue of using future state revenues from increased tax revenues from a population that is equipped with an XO-XS, in exchange for a loan from a development bank with the former vice président of the National Bank of Nigeria - Dr OBADIAH Mailafia. He confirmed this is possible. Both are working in Brussels and keep each other posted.
  5. Education in certain regions is really bad off. Mark WEST - Unesco http://eudevdays.eu/topics/ppp-achieving-quality-education-all : Recent statistic reports from Unesco found out that e.g. in Nigeria, inspite of progress in Millennium Development Goal nr. 2, i.e. Universal primary education, we did manage to get kids in a school, only they don't learn anything there:
    1. 28% of Nigerian public school students are not capable of reading and writing in spite of having spent 6 years in school. No wonder many parents who cannot afford private schools, take their kids from school and let them help the parents, grandparents, brothers or sisters or other family members. School is just a waste of time.
    2. Teachers are soo badly paid, those who do have some formation abandon the school landscape within 6 months
    3. Those who remain have not finished primary education themselves and are "thrown" into huge classes of 40 to 240 kids in one classroom, only to find out they don't have a blackboard, or the charc is missing and the kids don't have their schoolbooks, let alone exercise books and sometimes not even a pen. Everybody knows how to bake an egg, but if one always deprives the cook of one item every time, be it the egg, the pan, or the fire - even the best cook will bake zero percent eggs.
    4. --SvenAERTS 14:23, 29 November 2013 (UTC) added during the conference: Confronted with such situations, maybe a 27€/year XO-XS incl Photo Voltaic panel deployment is not such a silly idea. At least ALL kids have ALL the books and exercise books and a touch screen and trackpad to exercise writing on/develop their fine motorics on, and this for all grades in a whole school career + some 900 others as the (2013) 9 Gigabyte Flash memory can hold about 1000 ebooks. All kids and teachers can find out how the XO works as a book. And if the teacher leaves or at home there is no teacher, the XO-chatbots can take over if not real people if the kid's laptop can connect.

How much to fundraise?

The amount to secure during a fundraising, depends on what stage you find yourself in.
  1. ± 190 €/XO-XS.7 years average lifetime = 27 €/year.student . This price includes the portable flexible Photo Voltaic Panel. --SvenAERTS 14:23, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
  2. Of course you'll also have to fundraise for logistics, meetings, staying in hotels, food, etc. The EU has a "Per Diem" list per country. --SvenAERTS 14:23, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
  3. OLPC has a calculator where all these costs can be inserted, including electricity costs, internet costs, ... and everything is then recalculated in to how much this translates per student and per XO-XS. --SvenAERTS 14:23, 29 November 2013 (UTC)

    1. Nigeria however is a country with a very lucrative fossil fuel oil industry.
