... and thanks for visiting the Africa "OLPC" related Wiki-Pages, for the One Laptop Per Child Universal Primary Education project. This is an "Open Commmunity -, Open-Hardware - , Open-Software -, Open-Robotics"-project, similar to the Wikipedia and Open Source Community projects, like Linux, OpenOffice, etc. and it is working along Agenda 21 and Millennium Development Goal nr.2: Bringing Universal Primary Education

The aim of this educational project is to bring Universal Primary Education by 2015 as - anno year 2000 initiated - United Nations Millennium Development Goal nr.2. For this and above approach, - and also a lot of lobbying by the right persons on the right places and time - the United Nations is a Partner in this Open Community project! It is the largest educational project undertaken by Humanity ever... and deemed by many as one of the most inspiring projects out there. And things are moving very fast indeed: over 86.000 eBooks available, all education disciplines covered.

Update: About ALL kids in Uruguay, Peru, Rwanda, and several Island States, have the XO, an open-source, open-hardware, open-robotics and open-community laptop convertible into a tablet annex robots; Haiti, Australia, Cameroon, Mongolia and several school networks in the United States are going along the same path.

Though some Western kids may have an iPad class, may they still be missing the boat or are they on the wrong ship? Reading the wikipedia or being part of the wikipedia? That seems sum up the difference between proprietary copyright protected software projects and an open source, open hardware, open robotics, open community project as the One Laptopschool Per Child educational initiative.

A programmed to fail device or an XO laptop-x-tablet made to be repaired: all the same screws, only 1 standard + screwdriver needed?

OLPC is a not for profit that tries to remain as small as possible and is focussed on making sure the One Laptop Per Child initiative and hardware stays open source and open hardware. OLPC offers tools for the community to collaborate in working on the soft and hardware and helping out with deploying OLPC projects. OLPC soft and hardware is free to be used by all. OLPC has not opened and will not set-up any legal OLPC entity in Africa. OLPC is sure that there are competent individuals that will come together in an organization or that some existing organization will take up the lead in building a dynamic community that will take the OLPC initiative into the other regions in Africa. It is not possible in making a profit on the laptops. The prices are open and the same to everybody and merely depend on massive numbers. The only way to eventually earn money is by providing assistance to deploy - get through the different phases - and accompany the project, assisting the government in deploying One Laptop Per Child, assisting with training teachers, collaborating in making dedicated ebooks, etc.

Africa is a continent, not a country - we know and we hate to contribute even to the suggestion or unconscious message that is send out by talking about "Africa", as if it had much meaning, would refer to a country and even ... referring to a country what's the point of it, what useful information does it contribute if one is actually talking about individuals. In Africa live Africans. So what? That's about all the useful information it carries. That's a banality. What does that say about an individual African? Is it a he or a she, smart, uneducated, living abroad, a doctor, ... it contributes nothing to that. But anyway. So many refer to "Africa", I've created this "regional group". But without further due, probably you'll find it more useful to start from your country page to start from. You can find it by clicking the "Country" link below.

This said, the African society is a very multi-cultural society with a very diverse diaspora. We hope that this diaspora will work their way to these pages and that the Maltese society will benefit from these citizens with one leg in Malta and another still in their countries of origin to develop leadership for OLPC, Agenda 21, the MDG's, the African Union Agenda 2063, and accelerate bringing the level that our planet can be a nice place for all humans to new and inspiring heights for generations to come.

Agenda

  1. Is there room for an open source AND open hardware laptop annex tablet in the EU Educational Landscape?
  2. FAQ and Most Frequent Misconceptions
    1. How much does the laptop cost? 160 € + 30 € for the PV panel
    2. The deployment pays for itself thanks to the CO2e certificates the deployment generates and the additional tax revenues from an ict literate and equipped population who is more capable in generating additional value and consequently spends on more advanced gsm/satellite etc. on which the gvt. levies taxes.
    3. A computer for poor kids or simply the best educational laptop-x-tablet for any kid, including yours? You don't want to give your kid a 750 € iPad; you want a school reduced so it fits in a sturdy child proof lunch box and chatbots as 1st line teachers. Put 4 wheels on it and you have a robot, put 4 rotors on it and you have a drone.

Plan of Action

    1. A budget for lectures and workshops: who are the leaders in the educational landscape in your country?
    2. A budget for a labo in every region where the educational landscape can meet the XO-XS, robotics
  1. An olpc cell in your organization?

  4. Who is who
  5. Facts relevant for an XO deployment
  6. FAQ OLPC
    1. How much does the XO-XS laptop-x-tablet cost? cf FAQ OLPC
    2. The deployment can be financed by the CO2e certificates the project generates and the additional taxes for the government: a population that can read, write, do basic math, is ict-litterate and -equipped, can more readily add value to its society. This translates in a population that wants/needs higher priced gsm and satellite subscriptions; companies that the government can easily tax. A portion of the tax is sufficient to repay the loan from a development bank for a full scale XO-XS laptop-school deployment. More: --SvenAERTS 20:50, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
