Using QEMU on Windows XP/lang-es

Preparar QEMU

Para poder usar las imagenes provistas por la OLPC en una máquina corriendo Windows XP se debe instalar previamente un emulador: QEMU—que es open-source. Su acelerador, si bien no es requerido, se lo recomienda por razones de rendimiento.

Nota: algunas personas han convertido las imagenes para QEMU para que funcionen en VMWare Player, pero se aclara que el estándar de la OLPC es QEMU.

In order to use the provided OLPC images in your Windows XP box you must first install an emulator: QEMU which is an open-source processor emulator. The accelerator, not required, is recommended as a performance booster.

Note: people have converted some QEMU images to work with VMWare Player, but regular OLPC builds are for QEMU.

Emulador QEMU

1. Descargar QEMU para Windows
2. Como no hay instalador, basta con descompactarlo en cualquier directorio (ej: C:\Archivos de programa\Qemu)
3. Si se desea, se puede proceder a descargar el acelerador aquí abajo, o proseguir con la descarga de la imagen

1. Download QEMU for Windows from here
2. Since there's no installation step, just unzip it into any directory (ie: C:\Program Files\Qemu)
3. if you want, proceed with the accelerator below, if not go to downloading the image

Acelerador QEMU

El Acelerador QEMU es un piloto (driver) que permite al emulador de PC QEMU ejecutar mucho más rápido cuando se emula una PC sobre una máquina x86. La última versión estable es kqemu-1.3.0pre11.tar.gz.

1. Descargar el Módulo Acelerador de QEMU
2. Descompactar el archivo kqemu-version.tar.gz en un directorio (ej: C:\Archivos de programa\Qemu\KQemu-version)
   • Puede que sea necesario descompactarlo dos veces por el formato .tar.gz
3. En el directorio de destino, localice kqemu.inf e instalelo (menu/clic-derecho y seleccione Instalar). Deje que termine (llevará algunos segundos).
4. Abra una consola de comandos (alias cmd.exe) y escriba
   • net start kqemu
   • Si todo salió bien, se debería ver el siguiente mensaje:
     • The KQEMU virtualisation module for QEMU service was started successfully.

The QEMU Accelerator is a driver allowing the QEMU PC emulator to run much faster when emulating a PC on an x86 host. The latest stable is currently kqemu-1.3.0pre11.tar.gz.

1. Download the QEMU Accelerator Module from here
2. Unzip the kqemu-version.tar.gz file into a directory (ie: C:\Program Files\Qemu\KQemu-version)
   • may have to unzip it twice given the file format.
3. In the target directory, locate kqemu.inf and install it (menu/right-click and select Install). Let it finish (it'll take just a couple of seconds).
4. Open a command prompt (aka cmd.exe) and type
   • net start kqemu
   • If everything went fine, you should see the following message:
     • The KQEMU virtualisation module for QEMU service was started successfully.

Descargar una imagen OLPC

Paso siguiente, se necesita descargar una imagen de disco, para lo cual dirijase a la sección de los Latest Stable Build de la página OS Build images y navegue hasta el subdirectorio ext3 (que posee las imagenes para el sistema de archivos ext3; si se desean usar herramientas de desarrollo, dirijase a devel_ext3). La imagen que se busca tendrá un nombre como

olpc-redhat-stream-development-build-num-date_ext3.img.bz2

Una vez que la imagen haya sido descargada, se la debe descompactar (usando algun programa acorde a la extension bz2) y poner el archivo .img en el mismo directorio que QEMU (ej: C:\Program Files\Qemu)

Then you need to download a drive image, so go to Latest Stable Build on the OS Images page and navigate to the ext3 subdirectory (this has images for the ext3 filesystem; if you want to use development tools, navigate to devel_ext3). The image you want will be named something like olpc-redhat-stream-development-build-num-date_ext3.img.bz2

After you've downloaded the image, you must unzip it (using a program that understands the bz2 format) and place the .img file in the same directory as QEMU (ie: C:\Program Files\Qemu).

Iniciar el ambiente OLPC

Antes de lanzar la imagen emulada, recomendamos encarecidamente la lectura de Instrucciones de Sugar sobre como utilizar el ambiente—esto no se parece a Windows, Mac o cualquier otro sistema operativo! Para comprender un poco mas la filosofía detras de Sugar/lang-es, tambien les recomendamos leer los Lineamientos de la Interfaz OLPC.

Abra un consola de comandos (alias cmd.exe) en el directorio de QEMU y ejecutelo usando la imagen apropiada.

cd "\Archivos de programa\Qemu"
qemu.exe -L . -hda nombre_de_imagen

Donde nombre_de_imagen sea la última version que se haya bajado. Por ejemplo:

qemu.exe -L . -hda olpc-redhat-stream-development-build-185-20061117_2030-devel_ext3.img

Before you launch the emulated image, we strongly recommend reading through the Sugar Instructions on how to use the environment -- this does not look like the Windows or Mac operating systems!

Open a command prompt (aka cmd.exe) in the QEMU directory and launch it using the appropriate image.

cd "\Program Files\Qemu"
qemu.exe -L . -hda image_name

Where image_name is the newest version you have downloaded. For example:

qemu.exe -L . -hda olpc-redhat-stream-development-build-185-20061117_2030-devel_ext3.img

El emulador comenzará en una nueva ventana, y a los pocos segundos mostrará el logo 'XO' de la OLPC y Booting OLPC for qemu target in nn seconds. (De no hacerlo, pulse cualquier tecla, ingrese al menú de GRUB y elija la opción OLPC for qemu target. Se necesita bootear el emulador, no el hardware de la OLPC.

A continuación se verá una típica secuencia de booteo Linux finalizando con un diálogo solicitando un apodo de usuario.

Recordatorio: pulsando Alt + Ctrl libera / retorna el control a Windows.

NOTA: Existe algunos temas (principalmente para los primerizos) en como lograr la funcionalidad completa de la emulación.

The emulator will start in a new window, and will soon display the OLPC 'XO' logo and 'Booting OLPC for qemu target in nn seconds'. (If it does not, then press any key to go to the GRUB menu and choose the 'OLPC for qemu target' option. You need to boot the emulator, not the OLPC hardware.)

Then you will see a typical Linux boot sequence ending in a dialog asking for your nickname.

As a reminder: pressing Alt + Ctrl will liberate / return control to Windows.

NOTE: There are a some issues (mainly for the first timers) on how to get the whole enchilada going.

Cerrar la imagen OLPC

Para cerrar la "ventana" de la XO emulada, se debe primero entrar a la pantalla del monitor QEMU y despues salir. Eso se logra haciendo:

1. Asegurese que la ventana tenga el foco (la etiqueta debe decir QEMU - Press Ctrl-Alt to exit grab).
2. Presione Alt + Ctrl + 2 para entrar en el Monitor QEMU (en algunas máquinas puede ser necesario el 'shift': Alt + Ctrl + Shift + 2).
3. Escriba quit o q para salir/cerrar.

To close the OLPC "window" you must first go into the QEMU monitor screen and then quit. You do that by:

1. Make sure the window has the focus (label should say QEMU - Press Ctrl-Alt to exit grab).
2. Press Alt + Ctrl + 2 to enter the QEMU Monitor (may need shift as well on some computers: Alt + Ctrl + Shift + 2)
3. Type quit or q to quit.
