=== Language fluency levels === |
|||
(The following is taken from [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Babel Wikipedia]) |
|||
**'''xx-0''' if you don't understand the language at all. Use it ''not'' for every language that you don't know, but only when there is some reason why you might be expected to know it. For example, you may be of Italian descent, but you do not speak the Italian language, or if you are Canadian, and you do not speak French. |
|||
**'''xx-1''' for basic ability - enough to understand written material or simple questions in this language. |
|||
**'''xx-2''' for intermediate ability - enough for editing or discussions. |
|||
**'''xx-3''' for advanced level - though you can write in this language with no problem, some small errors might occur. |
|||
**'''xx-4''' for 'near-native' level - although it's not your first language from birth, your ability is something like that of a native speaker. |
|||
**'''xx-5''' for professional proficiency. Note that this template is currently only available for a few languages. |
|||
**'''xx''' (no hyphen or number) for native speakers who use a language every day and have a thorough grasp of it, including colloquialisms and idioms. |
|||
*[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Babel/Levels Expanded definitions of these levels] are also available. |
|||
The '''''xx''''' above are [[ISO 639-1]] two-letter language codes, such as '''en''' for English, '''es''' for Spanish, etcetera. |

Welcome
This is the main organizational page for the OLPC translations community. The purpose of this community is to provide translations, both linguistic and cultural, for any and all projects related to OLPC.
Where to Start
Only have 5 minutes?
- Proofread a translation: look for the blue translations bar at the top of the page and click on your language to view it, or see Category:Ongoing_Translation for pages that need help.
Haven't been here before?
- Create a wiki account!
- Add yourself to the list of active translators.
- Contact Xavi if you have any questions or need any help.
What should I do now?
- Read the how to guide on translating wiki pages.
- Find the language community that you fit into.
- Read the notes on Translating.
- Proofread previously translated materials.
- Find new material to translate.
People
You can find the list of active translators on the List of translators page.
Projects
Want to propose a translation project? Get a specific page or document translated? Find a translator to work with you on your project? Find a project or page to translate? Look for "missing translations" and "wanted translations" in Category:Languages (international) page and sign up! Also see the List of translators to find people that might be able to work with you on something.
Want something a little less specific? If you don't want to (or can't) commit to an individual project, you can still be helpful. Check out the Translation projects page to find projects that everyone can contribute to, no strings attached, or to let us know what you're working on right now.
To find (or share) translations, see Translated pages.
Tutorials
This is where we will keep all our tutorials! Tutorials should be written not by one person, but by the community as a whole. Keeping this goal in mind, we all need to agree to respect certain boundaries - differences of opinion or technique do not warrant deletion or 'correction'. Since there are a lot of different ways to do things, it's much more educational for people to each contribute their own ideas, so that readers can read a tutorial on, say, dealing with different subdialects, and learn not one, but several effective methods for each part of the process and be able to choose between them.
- Translating/HowTo - walks you through the translation of a page.
- Have an idea for a tutorial? Make a new page and begin to write one (or if you don't know anything about it but want to, make the page)! Don't feel obligated to do the entire thing in one go; you can always write more later, and others can always pitch in.
Question and Answer
Want to know something? Can't find it in the tutorials? Check out the Translators FAQ!
Maintenance
This community is currently being organized and maintained by Xavi. This is not a dictatorship, nor is it necessarily permanent. Feel free to give us suggestions, ideas, complaints, and any other kind of feedback! It's important that this community function as a group of people with a common goal, not as a group of people resentfully doing what we tell them to.
Language fluency levels
(The following is taken from Wikipedia)
- xx-0 if you don't understand the language at all. Use it not for every language that you don't know, but only when there is some reason why you might be expected to know it. For example, you may be of Italian descent, but you do not speak the Italian language, or if you are Canadian, and you do not speak French.
- xx-1 for basic ability - enough to understand written material or simple questions in this language.
- xx-2 for intermediate ability - enough for editing or discussions.
- xx-3 for advanced level - though you can write in this language with no problem, some small errors might occur.
- xx-4 for 'near-native' level - although it's not your first language from birth, your ability is something like that of a native speaker.
- xx-5 for professional proficiency. Note that this template is currently only available for a few languages.
- xx (no hyphen or number) for native speakers who use a language every day and have a thorough grasp of it, including colloquialisms and idioms.
- Expanded definitions of these levels are also available.
The xx above are ISO 639-1 two-letter language codes, such as en for English, es for Spanish, etcetera.
New in-wiki languages
There are several in-wiki things that need to be prepared / maintained when a new language comes on-line. There's a template that tries to keep things in check by providing the links to those pages that should be created in order to have full support: {{Language maintenance}}.
If you don't see your language below, just edit and add in the table below (in alphabetical order by language code):
|- valign="top" ! [xx]<br>{{langname-xx}}<br>english_name | {{Language maintenance | lang = xx }}
