One Laptop per Child (OLPC) Deployment Guide

(DRAFT—please make suggestions for improvements on the discussion page)

The OLPC Deployment Team: Walter Bender, David Cavallo, Carla Gomez Monroy, Edgar Ceballos

This is a generalized guide to a large-scale deployment of one laptop per child. It is a working document that reflects lessons learned from our initial pilots and deployments. Additional ideas will be incorporated as we learn from each other.

Every deployment includes planning (pre-deployment), execution (deployment), and support (post-deployment). Topics that need to be considered in detail in any deployment include:

  1. Core Team
  2. Logistics
  3. Localization
  4. Connectivity
  5. Power Infrastructure
  6. School Server
  7. Teacher Preparation/Student Facilitation
  8. Support
  9. Service/Repairs

Each of these topics is expanded upon below. Appended to this document are: (I) some tips based upon our experience in trial deployments around the world; (II) a sample deployment deployment schedule; (III) a sample workshop schedule; (IV) a check list to guide you through the deployment process; (V) a glossary of terms; (VI) a worksheet for planning deployment needs on an individual school basis; and (VII) a guide to Deployment Guide/imaging, activating, and registering laptops.
