I'm not sure to which template differences you refer, but I'm guessing you mean the /translations subpage.

I edited the OLPC Nepal/translations to conform with Translating/HowTo#Setting up the /translations for the following reasons:

1. short native language name (layout)
2. no capitalization (cosmetics)
3. avoiding red/missing links/translations

Having short names ( [नेपाली] instead of [नेपाल अधिराज्य - (Nepal Bhasa)]) is for saving space in the language navigation bar. In the long format, lots of space would be taken up just with 'descriptive' text. The no-caps is because all other pages are so.

The point of red/missing links/translations is a good point to discuss: how can we ask for translations?... we haven't really solved that and we are looking for ideas (although some attempts have been made). The other day I discovered that {{Google Translations}} only works in the root english page, so it should be reviewed how we can deal with that...

A more 'stealthy' way to ask for translations would be to add category tags, although we haven't settled in a standard category structure.

PS: I noticed you tried to hook up Category:OLPC Korea with the translating framework (Category:OLPC Korea/translations), in which case I would like to note that I have a hard time to imagine how categories could be translated as the categorization is performed by the wiki itself — pages are listed there because they include [[Category:Foo]] in their text, so a 'translated category' would need to have all translated pages recategorized, or re-tagged. This is not impossible, but I have serious doubts that this double structure will be manageable, leaving many inconsistencies and resulting in a duplicating structure that will be hard to maintain. Yup! an old request (2007-01-06). Thanks for the pointer about Babelfish, will consider shifting to it instead of {{Google Translations}} & {{Google Translate}} - booth need reworking anyway because they only work with the 'original' page and specific pairings of languages. Problem with automatic translations is that they usually mangle the text too much, so I doubt people use them except for a general idea of what the gibberish is about - I was too lazy that day with Greek... :) --Xavi 11:15, 24 September 2007 (EDT)

OBX red links

Hi! Saw you edited the Category:Core so that it won't be 'red'. The reason I hadn't done so previously is that I'm not quite sure about what many of the OBX-related categories should really be named (ie: just 'core' or 'core activities') so I left them to decide later. Same goes with the myriad of PO related categories... And maybe it's time to settle the matter. Hi, Mike! Thanks for your note. I'm staying in San Juan and may not be able to make it out to Boracay while I'm here due mostly to financial constraints, but if that changes I'll definitely let you know.

Wish there was some way for me to get my B4 out there so the teachers and students could see it, though. Would it be an option to set up Emulation on a computer (any computer) the school has access to? This won't have the cool mesh networking or embedded camera or sunlight-readable screen, but will otherwise act more or less like an XO - same software and all, and if they're working with and on content development that should be enough for a good start.

Let's talk sometime and catch up. I'd love to hear about what you've been doing in Kalibo and what kinds of things the community could do to support you. I don't believe I've ever had the pleasure of conversing with you in real-time - do you ever go on IRC or Skype on the evenings? I'm mchua on the first, mel_chua on the second; feel free to ping me whenever you see me there, or we can set up a time to chat.

I've got poky intermittent internet here as well - best solution that I've found is the DownThemAll firefox extension which lets you stop, pause, resume, etc. downloads (and also performs some acceleration). It's still less than ideal, but it's a bit better. Also, freenode is asking you to create a login (one word - so "chiefmike" not "chief mike") and password (not strictly necessary; you can skip this the first time) instead of your username/pass on the OLPC wiki. If you let me know when you'll be on again, I can shoot you the url for a n in-browser, no-authentication-required chat we can talk on until you get IRC up and running.
