Welcome, Nikki!

Green and white machine.jpg

Welcome to the One Laptop per Child wiki. Please make yourself at home; read through the Table of Contents and FAQ, and take a look around. If you need a general wiki-tutorial, Wikieducator has some excellent ones.

Some possible pages of interest:

  • OS images for emulation - so you can install Sugar and get tinkering
  • OLPC_Human_Interface_Guidelines - for designing interfaces
  • Etoys - paint as a programming tool; I bet you could come up with some sweet stuff for this.
  • Game_development - we'll need testers for the tools soon; it's a good chance for you to learn how to program.
  • There's a huge need for explanatory graphics like this that can explain both the laptop technology (would you be interested in helping with documentation, possibly in comic book format?) and the organization of materials (the linked picture shows one proposal for the library) to people without relying heavily on written language. Let me know if you're interested.
  • Artwork_Common_Room - there's not much here yet; would you and Jessi be interested in helping us start an artists' community?
  • Choosing_image_formats - notes on uploading images to the wiki.

There's a lot to do, and it all depends on what you're interested in and how much time you have - take a look around and give me a ping, and we'll find a spot for you. Feel free to leave me a note on my talk page if you have further questions or need help finding your way around. -Mel

wiki art?

Hi! It's been some time I've been wanting (or dreaming) of some more graphical / visual elements in the wiki itself... like for example I just reworked the Template:Delete in that vein (compare to the old version) but just reused a local image (scavanged from Etoys).

So if you have time we could maybe think about the wiki art :) Maybe in line with the OLPC Human Interface Guidelines in mind? Cheers, --Xavi 14:29, 13 June 2007 (EDT)

Digital Painting?

Hi. Perhaps add a topic sentence to Digital Painting describing the intended contents of the page? Stumbling upon it, I was unsure. :) MitchellNCharity 10:32, 19 June 2007 (EDT)

currency

There is now a Currency images and Talk:Currency images. Where to go from there... I'm not sure. Maybe put trimmed files on commons.wikipedia.org? MitchellNCharity 00:34, 10 July 2007 (EDT)

Re: Design request/Logo Request

Yep Yep, I would love to work on it! Let me know any missing details at--Delucks 18:56, 16 July 2007 (EDT)

I've only read your request on my talk page yesterday, I will start thinking/playing with this as well. Thanks for the offer! HoboPrimate 18:57, 20 July 2007 (EDT)

See my userpage for my idea for the logo. I've also sent the idea to Delucks. HoboPrimate 08:43, 1 August 2007 (EDT)

Drupal Dojo

Another possible inspiration for the volunteers frontpage / welcome wagon. We need to design an experience that's welcoming to newbies and they've done a remarkable job of it. google search should make all clear. Mchua 03:50, 17 July 2007 (EDT)

Web designers?

Do we have any volunteer web designers on the art team (or can we get one)? There are a number of wiki pages that could really use shininess - Summer of Content, for one. (The pages that we're using as public facing webpages that don't get edited very much, and/or are protected - not the ones that we really wiki away on.) Mchua 20:10, 26 July 2007 (EDT)

Hola!

Ok so I can access the wiki again. I'll begin translating the JAM page that Mel suggested tomorrow (tonight for you). Wing 10:33, 28 July 2007 (EDT)

Anne here!

Hee. Here's what I was trying to tell you on my talk page. Thanks SJ for helping me out.

Nikki, thanks so much for offering to help with the artwork, it really will be a neat project. We could take rolling additions as time permitted, so your winter break idea is a good one. Mostly the goal is to avoid translation by cutting words and replacing with pictures, so your contributions would be saving work for others. Thanks! ~~~~

Cambridge Science Festival 2008

Cambridge Science Festival 2008 is just a stub for now (created a moment ago), but the ACM folks hope to bang it into a proposal over the next week or so. MitchellNCharity 22:22, 7 December 2007 (EST)

gryphus a knockin'

Anything I can do I want to do, my stumbling block is the tangle of this wiki. I gave a note to Anne and am replying to you (thanks for giving me some attention a couple of days hanging out on the IRC channels made it seem like there wasn't anything needed) I popped out a quick sketch of the laptop, and given the most minor of direction and where to post the files I'm happy pumping out content. Media:lappyAnatomy.jpg

Yeah if you could get me the photo of the c machine and point out any major design deferences I can get a fixed and labeled illustration to the user guide folks! Gryphus 18:23, 11 December 2007 (EST)

throw up a welcome page!

Say sth about what you're planning, what's done so far, and how people can get in touch with you... even if just through this talk page! Sj talk 15:36, 16 December 2007 (EST)

That's a fine name -- go for it. We're having a Sunday lunch gathering this weekend for people who want a little hands-on test of dealing with support and volunteer triage; will review the wiki pages you're building as well. If someone from Art could be on-hand then to field questions about getting support-gang related art/icons, that would be grand. --Sj talk to me 20:19, 20 December 2007 (EST)
Also, check out the participate page and let's make it shine. I'm linking to it from the sidebar right now, since we need something simple and colorful. But we should merge in better links and info, and keep it concisse. close coordination with the welcome page perhaps... or we could discuss /which/ keyword to link from the sidebar. You should also apply to be an admin if you're going to start mucking about with the wiki. --Sj talk to me 23:18, 24 December 2007 (EST)

Emulating the XO Page

Hello Nikki,

I'm Mitra, a student from the Illinois Math and Science Academy and I am currently doing an Intersession with Mel, as you may already know. As part of this Intersession I took the opportunity to improve OLPC's tutorial page on how to emulate the software on their own computer. I hope that you can take the time to look at it, and perhaps leave some comments. Thank You: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Emulating_the_XO/Quick_Start.

licensing comments - art community

see most recent edit at Talk:Community_building. I'm pretty sure we have this on Licensing or somewhere but propagating it across wiki pages == good. Should be online late tonight. Mchua 13:09, 12 January 2008 (EST)

T-Shirts

We should do our own silkscreens, and have a silk screening party. A four or five color t-shirt could be done very inexpensively, and a a good party can make a few hundred in a day. This would be a good PR event, too, because it would give supporters and donors who are not technically inclined an avenue to participate.

We might even be able to get the blank t-shirts donated. We must have children's sizes!
