We are collecting all the free books, movies, music, and other content that we can in the next five days. Then, on Tuesday (2/19) the Creative Commons will be burning a LiveDVD as part of [http://wiki.creativecommons.org/LiveContent_2.0 LiveContent 2.0] with the selection of CC licensed materials that we are gathering --- this DVD will be distributed to events such as South by Southwest and elsewhere. The bundle of books and educational resources we collect will be used by OLPC to send all over the world for children, families, and schools! And Textbook Revolution will compiling and reviewing the best college-level resources they can find for the coming re-launch of their new, community driven site. User needs
Learning how to use your own machine means being able to use normal developer toolchains once you get down to a shell -- having man pages, syntax-highliting editors, and compiler toolchains available or hinted at should be a bare minimum. Learning to hack your system shouldn't require jumping through extra hoops that others would not have to. Alternately, there should be provisions in place to create space for students and teachers to set up services or do development on school servers. This and useful 'view source' keybindings are needed to start breaking into one's own systems and making interesting discoveries. |
Bundling up
The first notion of bundle is an executable collection of code and supporting material, along with the objects that it can read or store. Bundles are shared or distributed as a whole; objects they create can be shared or reused individually. There is also a notion of a generic bundle -- a simple way to throw a few objects together and label them, for the purposes of sharing. It may be helpful to have a bundle manager activity, which helps find what exists (rather than the Journal, finding what people have done). Security discussions around bundles have focused on the idea that they are all executable. Generic bundles will likely not fall under this regime. We should think about an intermediate level of security that supports some sort of group stamping by community groups. This would let anyone who wants to use and test and review new activities can play with a reasonable but not completely stable/approved set of activities. |
A budding publishing career
Lulu has some delightful collections of books. Some authors publish entire series of free texts on their own; others see using the channel for self-publishing as an art form in itself. My favorite author is currently cedric du zob -- his abstracts and book summaries alone are worth a read, and I fear that actually reading any of his work might ruin my fine first impressions. Sites such as Lulu and Flickr, whose primary purposes are not to highlight free works - but in these cases to provide tools for meaningful self-publishing, or a social sites for storing and sharing photos - have been remarkably successful at attracting collections of free works, all the same. This jibes with my feeling that a focus on freedom is at best of temporary interest, as it is the natural state of sharing and creativity which only seems imperiled while we have a culture that teaches that sharing should only be done with care, or that the way to succeed is to carefully control the use of ideas, and imagines high barriers to creation and distribution. |

Content Bundle Tools, Documentation, and Storage
Description
The experience of entering a library, either in real life or online, should be one of overabundance-- of infinite resources for learning, unlimited access to knowledge, and unbounded pathways of discovery. The OLPC content library must replicate this experience, and the first step towards replicating this experience is creating more content bundles. To this end, content bundles must be easier to make. We need user-friendly ways to create new content bundles, up-to-date documentation for the bundling process, and a selection of online repositories for storing and evaluating content bundles.
The first part of this project relates to the actual process of content bundling. Until now, the various components of the content bundle -- the library.info file, the index page, and the xol file -- have had to be created by hand. This part of the project will result in a set of web-based content bundling scripts:
- DONE: A web form that generates a library.info file.
- A form that allows a user to upload an index.html file or create one if no html file exists.
- A form that accepts other standard bundle formats (OCR, SCORM, etc) and converts them to .xol bundles
- A web-based script that runs a basic bundle checker suite on uploaded collections : metadata, bundle format [manifest], links. More complex validation can be developed as needed.
- IN PROGRESS: A web-based version of the bundler script that creates the bundle directory structure, zips it, then renames it as an xol.
- A wikibot that adds new bundles to the collections/activities pages.
- A featured content portal, and wiki-pages for reviewing and assessing the best materials.
- Generic content uploader script-- to wiki, curriki, etc.
- Test on school server.
The second part of the project proposes to revise the content bundle specification to reflect updates to the content bundle format. This part of the project would include updates/revisions to:
- IN PROGRESS: Creating_a_content_bundle
- IN PROGRESS: Sample_library.info_file
- DONE: Library.info
- IN PROGRESS: A revised metadata standard for .xo[l] bundles that includes new needed fields (see talk:bundles)
- Collections update
- The creation of new pages about the library template system.
The third part of the project is a longer-term solution to bundle storage, and this is to create OLPC tags or areas on various educational resource repositories and to place tagged content bundles there. This would create an OLPC presence on these OER repositories, ideally fueling more content bundle creation, as well as encourage users of these repositories to evaluate the bundles and/or incorporate them into their own learning projects.
Emphasis on:
- Curriki/JM. Developing a presence for content bundles and learning activities on the site; encouraging tagging and rating.
- Meneame/PF. Work with Uruguay team to develop a site for sharing, tagging, and rating resources. Spanish and English versions (companion sites and/or localized versions).
- Moodle/ML. Emphasis on school server needs. Integrate with content repositories. Export-to-content-bundle module?

School Server use cases
Description
What goes on a school server? What kinds of tools do kids need to learn? This project addresses the issue of content for the school server-- software, tools, library materials, etc. The goal : a disk image of a "starter" school server that can be customized for local, regional, and national deployment.
Starting from the top-level description of the XS Server Software, I will research, specify, and then configure software including (but not limited to) the following:
- Tools for collaborative learning, including Moodle, MediaWiki, as-yet-unspecified blogging software, and a global annotation system.
- An annotated, expanded XO Activity set, including media players and tools for filesharing.
- An enhanced and expanded content library, including maps, reference, curated OER content, and documentation (with links to external repositories).
In some ways, this project is one that must be defined as it unfolds. Rather than a "needs assessment" approach, I envision an organic process of development that will evolve through conversations with trial schools and the OLPC community.
Timeline

Global Learning Activities
Description
As large-scale deployments begin and the G1G1 laptops make their way around the world, the global community of XO users will need ways to connect to each other. One of way to do this is through shared learning activities, in which children from all over the world participate in the same learning activity and then share their results and experiences with others. Potential projects include: local Bug Blitzes shared through ZipcodeZoo.com, additional Our Stories recordings shared on the now-live ourstories.org, classroom newspapers using the Journalism Activity and published to the web, etc.
Projects could be explained and announced on the wiki, or through a once-weekly email sent to a mailinglist, or both.
Ideal results? Kids talking to (and learning from) other kids, discussions about learning centered around shared experiences, initiating presence on various web sites with a "swarm" of OLPC-related contributions, models for future shared learning activities.
