Hi Cjl, I'm a former OLPC-EU employee in Brussels, preparing a trip to visit my wife's family in Cambodia and to meet the Minister of Education of Cambodia. Saw you on http://wiki.laptop.org/index.php?title=OLPC_Cambodia&action=history ... do you have any special interest to Cambodia in particular? Can you team-up / coach me? Hello there, we could definitely make a new-translation template. It doesn't exist yet; only the template fr the nav header does... --Sj talk 08:44, 25 February 2008 (EST)
- So noted :) At any rate, we are /not/ using a new template at the moment, so there is no simple way to add categorization to all the translation pages. We could change things so that they are in the template own namespace, and not the main namespace, however, which might clean things up more precisely (see special:allpages for a breakdown by namespace). --Sj talk 10:34, 26 February 2008 (EST)

OLPC HIV/AIDS work
Hi Cjl. Thanks for the comment. I linked to the OLPC HIV page from my site now, and I hope to fill it out as I develop the curriculum I'd like to use for the intervention more. I welcome any comments you have about my beginning ideas. --Jumpbean 22:53, 10 March 2008 (EDT)

Nice review of the deployment guide. What are your thoughts on Food Force 2? --Sj talk 14:42, 24 March 2008 (EDT)
- I've never played it, but I like the idea. On the wiki I've seen what looks like serious activity by the XO-porting effort and I'm 100% supportive, if unable to offer anything besides linking them to cat:Health. It obviously blends nicely with the Animals/Health concept. I did drop a link on the Nutrition page for the Feeding Minds, Fighting Hunger curriculum materials, which, it seems, are intended to go hand-in-hand with Food Force. I think you could pull together a great bundle (game & lesson plans) quickly if the XO port is nearing readiness. Cjl 15:05, 24 March 2008 (EDT)
Re: Vandalism
The fastest way to get an admin to fix things, I think, is to ask on the #olpc IRC channel. You should definitely go there if you want to stop a large, in-progress vandalism. I have no problem with you posting requests on my Talk page, though. Vandalism on pages ending with "index.php" seem to be the result of a badly programmed botnet; nothing really links to these pages, so the damage is (currently) marginal, but it's not a bad idea to get these users banned and pages deleted, just to keep things tidy. Thanks, —Joe 19:56, 28 March 2008 (EDT)
Thanks, again! —Joe 01:34, 31 March 2008 (EDT)
Thanks, again! I do have the vandalism page on my watchlist, but posting on my talk page remains a faster and more reliable way to get my attention. I'm not sure how many other admins are currently checking for vandalism, as it is not as frequent as it was a couple months ago. Thanks, —Joe 15:08, 4 April 2008 (EDT)
Hi Chris
I'm newer to wikis than to XO's! Thanks for the links. I don't really the USB-to-thernet myself. I'm trying to put together a guide to getting set up, since I keep seeing similar questions popping up in online forums, and the advice in forum threads gets messy. I'd rather just point someone to a page. I'll have to see about connecting the AZolks. There actually is already a user's group going, not sure if the page just needs updating or if the page creator doesn't know about the group.
I spend much of my XO-time at OLPCNews. Timothy
- Hi Chris- I've moved most stuff off of my user page and onto User:Tdang/XO_Setup. I figure if I can encourage folks to do similar, there will be good examples for newbies to follow setting up, plus I'll get the satisfaction of virtually looking over shoulders at what others like to do. The ne wpage is likely too thick, still, but I think it's OK for now. Thanks for the feedback. Tdang 04:05, 31 March 2008 (EDT)
- Re: Etiquette-Thanks for the info! For the main space, that makes good sense. For the user space, any of those solutions seems awkward, but what the hell. I'll cope. (And this time around I'm posting it on both our talk pages.) Tdang 09:33, 4 April 2008 (EDT)

Uruguay deployment update page changed
Hi Chris,
Thanks for your suggestion to make a change to the Uruguay deployment update page.
I changed it to Uruguay Deployment Update, created a new page with that name and pasted the text there. In retrospect I should have used the "move" tab :-( Do you know how to remove the Deployment Update page?
Kill it if you know how.
I removed the text but it looks like the page lives on. Not urgent just trying to clean up after myself.
Thanks,
Greg S
Hi Chris,
You seem like a wiki pro!
I am trying to build and improve the Uruguay page in conjunction with some folks from Montevideo (mostly Pablo Flores).
Its at: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Uruguay
If you have any comments or suggestions on how we can better organize the site please let me know or just go ahead and do it.
Do you have any suggestion on how we can easily have an english and spanish version of every page? I think I have seen that link on other pages but not sure how to get it done. Any tips apprceciated(a link and RTFM is OK too :-)
Thanks,

- Gregorio,
- Mucho gusto. . . I'm happy to try to help get you pointed in the right direction, but I must be clear that I'm no wiki expert (started here in Jan '08), but I'm trying to learn and I'm a quick study.
- As for RTFM or is it RTFWiki :-), here are some pages to start with.
- Getting the translation thing right definitely requires some knowledge of the proper use of templates, and I'm not an expert there. It might be best to post a similar question to User_talk:Xavi. Special:Contributions/Xavi shows a lot of work on translation issues. Maybe also User_talk:Homunq who looks like something of a template expert or User_talk:Dupuy. I think any of them would be better able to help you. I will take look at your pages when I have a chance to see if there are any suggestions I can offer, but for the translation process, I'm probably not your expert.

- With the recent announcement that there is a Round #2 of G1G1 coming up in the fall, I think it will stay that way for now, hopefully the site it links to will be updated to reflect those plans. Cjl 20:18, 28 May 2008 (EDT)
I've been nominated, but not yet adminned :-). It's my understanding that it is bad form to campaign for an RfA (and that would include making campaign promises), but it should be acceptable to say that it would be my intent to wield the mop-n-bucket with a light touch in service of wiki usability and accuracy. For instance, while agreeing in principle with deprecated status of G1G1 in the frame, I would probably not take immediate, unilateral action, instead taking it up with someone holding bureaucrat-level priv in search of consensus. I run an IT shop and I've always trained my network/database/desktop admins on the dual principles of a) the distinction between having the "power" to do something and having the "authority" to do something b) "do the right thing" when it needs to get done.
Measure-projects postings
Hi, Bill here. I agree the talk page where I posted the microphone project is a lousy place to put it. I put it there only because, honestly, I don't know how the OLPC folks want to structure these sorts of entries. I have more stuff to post, but I need an "projects" (sub-)structure to work with. Right now, the amplifier etc I posted is lost in the Measure/Projects sub-article. Lemme know, and I'll move the posting. What I'd recommend is, on the Measure page, an index of some sort of these projects, with links. Lemme know how I should approach this. Thanks, Bill Wvbailey 10:16, 7 May 2008 (EDT)
Measure-project structure
Hi, Bill here again. I've become bold. But ... One of the mysteries of (and a source of frustration in) dealing with this OLPC wiki, as opposed to Wikipedia, is that there seems to be employees of the OLPC organization that have more "control" than editors such as my self, and I don't want to step on any organizational toes, but I don't want my efforts to go to waste, either. Wikipedia is straight-forward with regards to the hierarchy -- there isn't one; even administrators get reverted. For example, as I noted on the Talk:Measure page below your suggestions, I want to move the "temperature activity" out of the body of the page into its own article. But should I? Do I have to "get permission" or "achieve consensus"? How long should should I wait? The "Activity of the Month" has been there for 3 or 4 months. It's time for it to find its own home. Bill Wvbailey 15:35, 11 May 2008 (EDT)
re: nih syndrome
my perception is it's not so much nih syndrome as it is 'we lack the manpower to reach out on a large scale - at the moment it's highly dependent on other groups coming to us, and we already have enough traffic from that direction to have more coming in that we can handle.' That's my own view, though, and others' opinions may vary. Mchua 01:44, 17 May 2008 (EDT)
Upload images failure
Is it just me or is there an image-upload problem since yesterday? I see you and I both uploaded images yesterday. Lemme know what you know ... Thanks, Bill Wvbailey 12:30, 18 May 2008 (EDT)
- Just uploaded two images successfully, a third doesn't look like I think it should, but I put that down to my newness with Inkscape, not wiki. Cjl 13:03, 18 May 2008 (EDT)
I'm basically "dead in the water". Yesterday I successfully uploaded to Wikipedia the image I want to upload to here, but I've tried a bunch of different things and nothing has helping -- I get an error message that "the file I'm trying to upload seems to be empty". If you know of someone or somewhere I should go for help, please lemme know (my suspicions are directed at Norton's antivirus). Thanks, Bill
I've been able to upload a couple smaller png files (the larger of two is about 1 megabyte). So the issue something to do with the file size, and maybe png versus jpg -- unlike the jpg files, the png files don't end up with the "empty" message; rather, big png files (e.g. 5 meg files) just seem to "hang" forever. If I determine anything more I'll let you know. Bill Wvbailey 11:18, 20 May 2008 (EDT)
Congratulations, new admin!
Welcome to the crew.
Mozambique HIV work
Hi Cjl. Thanks very much for your links and recommendations. They look like they will be very useful to the development of the intervention I hope to evaluate there. Localized look and feel
a friend from the Sur crowd wonders if the look/feel of certain wiki pages can be localized (tabs, etc). no idea here, so I'm coming to my favorite localization minded admin. Primary target for messing with that would be, for example, the Sur page Yamaplos 21:05, 5 June 2008 (EDT)
- I don't think it's practical conditionally change the language of the Mediawiki:sidebar (left side) or the tabs (top bar). If there is a way to do it I just don't know what it is. However, it is possible to simulate that effect. Go to Sur and try the "testing for Yama" link, it's a bit of a hack, but it sort of works. Cjl22:01, 5 June 2008 (EDT)
- yeah, it's sort of painful, but it's AMAZING! It's somewhat shocking that if you follow a link, you don't get the page in English but in Googlspanish! Let's leave the link there, let me let some of the Surers drop by and say what. Thanks!! Yamaplos 22:28, 5 June 2008 (EDT)

I have done an initial version of this, but there are some issues remaining for discussion, so you may not want to dial up the security just yet. Also, you didn't lower protections for Template:Users so I haven't updated that.@alex 16:59, 13 June 2008 (EDT)
- Thanks for fixing prots on Template:Users - you might also want to semi-protect the translations of these templates as well, I'm not sure. Keyboards
Cjl: Thanks for noticing my mistakes. I have no stake in how the keyboards are actually laid out; I just needed the English keyboard to be available on a page all by itself. Since you seem to know more about this area, would you mind merging OLPC English Keyboard and OLPC US International Keyboard however seems best to you? (I'm working on a totally different project; namely, trying to learn whether and how the Semantic Mediawiki stuff can be applied to the task of test case management. I wound up modifying the US keyboard pages only because I wanted to explore how SMW could be used to build an i18n & l10n test matrix...) --Michael Stone 00:52, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Query about deletion
23 July 2008
Hello Chris,
Normally I'd send an email about this topic, but there is no clear mechanism to do so showing on my personal page, and since I'm using an XO, page navigation is slow, so I'm disinclined to spend a lot of time looking for a better way.
I don't log on much, once or twice a month. When I logged on today, there was a link telling me I had new messages. When I followed the link, it took me to my talk page which was empty. There was a "user page" tab which I switched to, which gave me the impression that my user account had been deleted because I was a vandal. After a few more browses, I realized my account was intact still, and the "user page" message was apparently about the deletion of some vandalism that occurred on 7/1/2008, which curiously is also the date of my last login. This deletion was apparently done by you.
If I am wrong about any of the above, please correct me.
So the question is: are my contributions unwelcome here? If so why? If not (double negative -> are welcome), the clarity of vandalism correction and reports leaves much to be desired. The "user page" tells me I should probably not edit it, since it has been deleted, yet since I have no access to the content that was deleted, I can hardly tell whether it really was vandalized, or whether you are the vandal (which I doubt, but the possibility exists). Shouldn't a proper wiki history include a trail of both a vandalism and its correction.
Finally, will this ominous and disconcerting "user page" warning ever go away? I've logged out and in again and it is still there. Is this the same as an empty history? Is there any conceivable reason I might want to edit my "user page"?
By the way, in case there is any doubt, I am an engineer, not a vandal. Esemplectic 19:49, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

Astronomy 101
Now that I've reorganized the StarChart code so that the constellation figures data is a separate file, it's possible for someone to take the constellation table and combine it with some fairly simple plotting routines to create a "Constellations Flash-Cards" activity. This would display a constellation figure and a multiple-choice list of constellation names. The child would attempt to pick the correct name for the constellation.
After some number of incorrect attempts (maybe 2 wrong tries out of five possible choices), the activity would show the correct name.
An advanced version of this might for example also give the names of the brightest of the stars in the constellation.
I'd do this myself, but I'm still a novice at Python and I don't yet know how to detect mouse clicks on the XO.

- Here's a tip for you :-) -- when reverting a vandal's edits, check to see whether the last edit it reverts to is also by an anon or a newbie / red-userpage user. If so, check the history to see if the previous edit also looks like vandalism... in which case you'll need to select the last good-looking rev by hand, edit that old rev, and save it. --Sj talk 07:12, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Mouse Click Event
You said "Have you tried dropping by #sugar on freenode and asking about the mouse-click event problem you are having?". What's "freenode"?
I did post a question on the OLPC News Developer Q&A forum (but those questions usually go unanswered -- I don't think there are many Python / PyGTK programmers watching that). I tried code virtually identical to what's in Bounce, but it appears that something is intercepting the mouse events before I can see them.
My GUI consists of a class derived from gtk.DrawingArea contained in a gtk.ScrolledWindow which is the target of the Activity's set_canvas() call. Neither the DrawingArea nor the ScrolledWindow seems to see the mouse click. So I theorize that the Activity has taken my Scroller and put it into something else, but I don't know how to obtain a reference to that object.
