Hi Seth, thanks for pointing out the borkable pages; only one of them really needed to go. |

We could use some more cleanup pages here on the wiki to coordinate efforts to find weird articles. |

== Product News Page == |
Tell me more about how your speex work is coming -- have you tested out how well that works recently? |
What was your reason for removing 'OLPC' from the Product News Page? This is still a page maintained by OLPC, but I cleaned it up today because we expect countries are going to start referring to the page for solid information in regards to peripherals. JoshSeal 17:19, 30 July 2008 (UTC) |
And I'd love to help get that flickr idea going; perhaps creating a group about it on flickr and certainly creating a set of tags... is there a standard way to do this within the flickr community? |
: I agree with your observations. Although I think its important to have a page that new countries interested in OLPC can refer to and gain at least an approximate understanding of what's available. Who has the Solar price list? Richard? Also, I think the Handcrank should be put in a new section such as 'past products' with a summary of why it didn't work rather than just removing it - otherwise people will always ask "what ever happened to the hand crank?". I'll make these changes. |
: I consider this page more useful and relevant for countries rather than G1G1 - they can just go to XO Explosion. It should thus be designed that way. Each product does have its own pages I think, I'll add them. I speak to Richard often regarding tech power issues, but I was hoping someone was in charge of costs for all the products... |

:Wiki cleanup:I've been working on updating the OBX templates on a few of the activities. I would say that 50% still need to be worked on and about 25% were already correct. It's pretty easy to work on while I'm working at my day job, so it's not a big deal. I'll try to keep an eye out for strange pages like that, vandalism seems like it's pretty well taken care of ATM. |

:Speex: I haven't made much progress because I just moved and don't have interweb at home hooked up. It's not really feasible to transcode in an windows environment, at least not in batches. I will have the 'nix server up sometime next week that I can run batching tests on. I have pulled in a few gigs of audiobooks from archive and torrents, so I'm ready to transcode. I have the minimum settings that I liked, so we'll see if they can get the books small enough. I might have to sacrifice a little more quality. I'll keep you informed. :Flickr, I love social media, there's just so much that can be done with such a community. I have a group started at http://flickr.com/groups/olpc/ which wasn't taken as a group address yet surprisingly. There is another existing group that is more about photos OF the OLPC than photos FOR the OLPC. There are already a few groups that deal with Public Domain images, and an entire system for searching for photos with various CC license. It is fairly easy to write up a default 'invite' text that you can copy and paste as a comment on photos. There is enough scripting on flickr that the user is notified and is given a button to accept or decline. I have invited a few photos of the OLPC, but that's really not what the children WITH olpc's are going to want to see. |

::That's the only thing slowing me down with Flickr so far. We can ask people to contribute photos they would /like/ on the OLPC, photos /of/ the OLPC, photos that have acceptable copyright or any combination thereof. We should probably start a Contributer page like Internet_Archive and now Librivox(see below) to figure out: what licenses are acceptable (does Asheesh's lib let us do CC -by attribution in metadata?? that would be excellent), what type of content is wanted, should these be in subject based packages. Maybe this is known, but /I/ don't know the answers, and I would like that sort of thing to be accepted in writing before I go out and sorta-kinda represent the OLPC project. I've been worried about getting 'off message' when I've been I've been talking to some people over at Wikibooks and the slovenian professor, so I've been on the far side of careful and I've been doing my best to represent myself as a volunteer and talk about things that /I/ would like for the OLPC, not what the OLPC people want/need. It's not like a TON of policy stuff is on the wiki or talked about in IRC. Well this is getting lengthy, so I will see/talk to you tomorrow.Specialization is for Insects 00:32, 15 October 2007 (EDT) |

Just thought to give a shout-out to some our editorial board, to let them know of some recent updates I did for 'Issue 0 (pilot)'. |
This should be a proper "contributing site" page, after the model used by Internet_Archive. If you have a moment and can fill in that kind of info -- links, icon, and extent of collection -- that would be useful. As an aside, I'm trying to get groups of teachers and librarians to have reading hours where they record themselves and upload to librivox -- since kids libraries already do a lot of reading and even podcasting; and I want them to start doing multiple-person recordings, with a reasonable tech setup and multiple mikes... there are still no public recordings of shakespeare, for instance! Took the day off from work (easy when one works for oneself, I just had to ask myself for a day off. :)... get a few items done... |
:Yeah, I would love to do that! I'll put that on my to-do list. It's so great that you're helping people contribute to Librivox. It's such a great project. What if we had a that on whatever "how you can contribute" page that exists. Far more layman users are going to be able to contribute to that (with a $20 usb mic or less) and a copy of Audacity, than most of the current OLPC work that is going on right now. |
:I wish I had my little booth put back together so I could read more often. PS, there are a few Shakespeare recordings on LV, but not nearly enough. Yep, you called Preinstalled XS out correctly. It's clutter that I don't have firm plans to get back to (although it's fresh in my mind and will likely be spinning around there in the next few days). I had approximately 5 minutes to type before running for the train, and (imo) poorly-discoverable clutter is better than nonexistence - you found the page and did something about it, did you not? ;) |
I'm not a green volunteer, so I've seen the threshold above which activation energy will be too high for enough people to change their habits enough such that a meme takes hold - and I'm trying to find ways to lower these barriers as well. |
If the desire is to have people put the things you listed in all their pages, here's one thing to do: make templates and make it insanely easy to use them - or better, make it require effort to not use them (that is, have them on by default - not sure if/how this is possible). See Template:Project and Template:Jam - though using those templates themselves requires effort, they fill stuff in with decent defaults. |
Now if things could be scripted such that every new page created by link text in the Open projects list (or by clicking a button on that page) would start out as that template - actually, give me a second... |
