Introduction
Of course, the aim of citizens under the flag of OLPC Korea is to persuade the Korean government to participate in the OLPC project, but we take some different approaches. Because the IT infrastructure of South Korea is in a status somewhat different from most of under-developed nations, we (some Koreans) are now localizing the OLPC project to be proper to the current IT environments of South Korea.

Because the Korean government has already established a kind of national IT reformation plan, Vision 2030, and the plan encompasses educational informatization, we need to adjust the OLPC project to harmonize with the Vision2030 plan. Major adjustments are as below.

Local Adjustments
For South Korea;
- OLPC HAD BETTER be supplied to not only elementary school children, but pre-primary, secondary and college level students also.
- Because the Korean government wants to establish a national-wide information superhighway connecting all organizations each other(connecting not only among schools but governments, corporations and other organizations all together), we need to supply OLPC-like machines to other social sections also (such as governmental organizations or corporations).
- Because the Korean government wants to apply FEA to all social sections in Korea, we need to establish a kind of localized FEA, that is Open Enterprise Architecture, harmonized with the OLPC project.
Yes, it's quite different from the original concept or goals of OLPC, but we already did a lot of adjustments necessary. We hope our trial be a reference model to some nations such as USA or Japan who have similar governmental plans.

Some derivatives of OLPC
THE CONTENT BELOW IS OUR TEST IN A LAB ONLY, NOT A REAL MODEL BEFORE PRODUCTION
We are now making some derivative prototypes based on OLPC. We hope OLPC to be used for childern (3~12 years old Koreans, because the primary educations for most of Korean children begin from 3~4 years old, due to some peculiar (or notorious) educational eager of Korean parents. So, we think OLPC is most appropriate for those ages, 3~12 years old.
As you know, from IT infra aspects, South Korea is one of the highly developed nations and almost all students connect to the Web almost every day, at schools, at homes and at PC bangs. Therefore, we hope to make three derivatives of OLPC and now under the process of making MOCK-UPs.
- Larger OLPC for students in secondary educations.
- OLPC Smartphone for college students.
- Korean Mesh Network for all students in Korea.
A larger OLPC: Type II OLPC TEST MODEL
We design a larger OLPC proper to the hand size of students, 13~18 years old. It's quite easy work, just enlarging the display and keyboard panels of the original OLPC.

OLPC Smartphone: Type III OLPC
The second derivative Experimental model of OLPC is a smartphone type, designed for college students and citizens. Because more than 80% of college students in South Korea are using cellular phones, we think OLPC of cellular phone type is proper to the daily lives of those college students. Of course, by substituting their mobile phones with OLPC-based smartphone, the spread of OLPC may be more easily widened.

- additional input/output device, a set of display and keyboard.

Korean Mesh Network
We hope all educational facilities adopt OLPC or one of its derivatives. Then those OLPCs shall establish a natural communication network because of the population density of South Korea.
Furthermore, because the missions of OLPC are somewhat different from those of current laptops, the mesh network had better be managed by a kind of NGO, consisting of governmental divisions, NGOs, educational organizations and others.

Progress
Pre-primary schools
Due to governmental interests on national-wide kindergarten system, the educational process in South Korea is expected to begin from 3 years old in a near future. So, we plan to distribute OLPC to those pre-primary educational facilities first of all. See the list of those facilities and contact information in Korean pre-primary schools.
Because of some economical and political issues, the Korean government hesitates to accept OLPC as it is. So, we made some adjustments to the original OLPC plan. That is, we start a pilot program of applying OLPC to kindergarten level. Visit a pilot kindergarten program for details.

Governmental Content
XO Korea has reclassified the governmental functions of Korea (about 65,000 services which are repetitive or duplicative ministry by ministry, and division by division) into about 3,000 independent functions (services). I hope those 3,000+ functions to be programmed via Squeak eToy, Smalltalk or Python by XO users of the world, children or not.
Business Content
XO Korea is using UNSPSC (united Nation's Standard Product & Service Classification) to classify industrial fields of any society (15,000+ businesses), and setting Standard Workflow of each industry/business/manufacturing procedure via YAWL (Yet Another Workflow Language).
Open Enterprise Architecture is a framework to encompass both governmental content and business content.
XO Derivatives
As XO laptop is designed for about 10 years old children, its size is improper to older children, especially to children in developed nations. XO Korea is now designing a larger prototype of XO, all the same functions as XO, but different in its size. In addition, XO Korea also is designing some other XO variations,
Korean Mesh Network
Korean Mesh Network is a trial to establish ultra-low cost national communication infrastructure via OLPC XOs, XO Repeaters, and School/Government/Business Servers. As there will be more than 10,000,000 XOs and its variations in Korea until 2010, those XOs shall establish an independent communication network covering the entire nation.

Open Enterprise Architecture

Introduction
Open Enterprise Architecture (OEA) is an open source version of Federal Enterprise Architecture(FEA) of the USA government. According to the USA Whitehouse, to transform the USA Federal government to one that is citizen-centered, results-oriented, and market-based, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is developing the Federal Enterprise Architecture (FEA), a business-based framework for government-wide improvement.
A BUSINESS-DRIVEN APPROACH In contrast to many failed “architecture” efforts in the past, the FEA is entirely business-driven. Its foundation is the Business Reference Model, which describes the government’s Lines of Business and its services. This business-based foundation provides a common framework for improvement in a variety of key areas such as:
- Budget Allocation
- Information Sharing
- Performance Measurement
- Budget / Performance Integration
- Cross-Agency Collaboration
- E-Government
- Component-Based Architectures
We, OLPC Korea, are now transforming FEA into OEA for every nation to utilize that enterprise architecture for more efficient governmental services of their own nations.
OEA & OLPC
At a first grance, OLPC and OEA are quite different ones, and why is OEA described here? Once again, there are two reasons here. First, the Korean government is now integrating all IT resources in the nation into one standard enterprise (or IT) architecture. Secondly, we (OLPC Korea) DON'T regard education IN school and that OUT school as different ones. Governments also are good places for children to learn the world. So, we hope to provide children with contents such as;
- the basic concept of governments
- the concrete process of each governmental service being provided
- the method of participating in governmental activities as citizens or preliminary governmental employee
Via OEA, we are writing a set of educational contents on MOODLE, naming;
- what is government, what is budget
- who are governmental employees, who set the procedure of governmental services, who give the right of governmental power to governmental employees
- how governmental services are provided, how governmental employees are recruited,
- where is government physically or in Web
- when budget is determined
- why we need governments, a particular governmental organization, a particular division or a particular personnel
Further, via OEA, we hope to establish virtual governmental organizations (divisions and desks also) in the Web where children can visit and participate without limits. Children can see the workflow of each governmental section, can see source code of each governmental operation, can add codes on it or can modify it. We call it participation. That also is the motto of the Korean government.

- We hope each governmental organization (or division) has its own web server, which provides not only normal web pages explaining the organization or so, but services also. School Server can be used by governments also, that is Government Server. OEA and business
Via OEA, we are extending the FEA to include not only governmental sections but private (or business) sections also. By establishing a set of standard operations (processes) of various business sectors, children can learn directly from the world rather than via the interpretation of other persons (or teachers) about what the world is like.
Based on UNSPSC (UN Standard Product and Service Classification), children can visit any of 20,789 UNSPSC categories and 200,000+ concrete business sectors to learn how business is done. Children may visit a cart factory to see how carts are made and sold in market, or a semiconductor research center to learn how a semiconductor like x86 or a Marvell chip is designed by company researchers.

OEA and schools
We think a school is a kind of interpretation system where some skilled persons deliver knowledge to children about what the world is like. However, OEA is designed as a direct route for children to reach the world itself. Via OEA, we hope they can Not JUST learn about the world, BUT participate in it ALSO.

Introduction
Because the IT infra of South Korea is quite well established compared to developing nations, it's rather easy for any OLPC (or its derivatives) to connect to the Internet regardless of their locations. However, we expect those 20,000,000+ OLPC and its derivative machines can establish a national-wide mesh network themselves. Therefore, there are two routes for each OLPC (or its derivative machine) to connect another, one via the current information highway of South Korea and the other via Korean Mesh Network, composed of more than 20,000,000 machines.
Those machines shall be connected each other horizontally and hierarchically using Moodle and wiki architecture.
Networking
Every olpc laptop can communicate with other olpc latop or servers via Wifi, and servers communicate each other via Wimax.
Because of the mesh network capability, all laptops and servers shall maintain network connectivity 24 hrs/365 days.
Those networks can be classified under the kinds of educational facilities as below; kindergartens, primary schools, middle schools, high schools and colleges etc.
The hierarchical structure of OLPC network is as below.
School network
- class server: it is a place for 20~50 children to save large files, to backup their daily activities, and to run various educational softwares (acitivities) which is too large to be on XO laptops. OLPC Korea estimates about 10~100 class servers shall compose a school network which is contolled by a xo korea/school server. Each class server has about 100 giga bytes hdd, 1 giga byte memory, and 1~2 Ghz cpu resources. As all Korean schools already have sufficient PCs, the only thing to do is to convert those Window XP machines to Linux servers, and it's quite easy work. It's basically with moodle, and the number of class servers is estimated to be about 500,000~600,000 units.
- school server: it is the machine controlling class servers in each school, so there will be one school server per school. Like class servers, it also has Moodle on it, but somewhat different from that on class server; it provides adminstrative functions necessary to manage schools. Among class servers and/or school server, Wimax will be used to link each other. Settings and codes for school servers are described below.
- local server: it is to manage school servers in an area with about 100,000 populations (시 군 구).
- wide area server: it is to manage local servers in an area with about 5,000,000 populations (광역자치단체)
- national server: it is to manage wide area servers in a country.
- one class server per about 20 students - layer 5: the lowest server layer 각 학급이 관리하는 학급 서버.
- one school server per 20~100 class server of each school - layer 4: 각 학교가 관리하는 학교 서버
- one local server per 10~50 school server - layer 3: 시군구 교육청이 관할하는 시군구 서버
- one wide area server per 10~50 local server - layer 2: 지역 교육청이 관할하는 16개 광역자치단체 서버
- one national server for 16 wide area server: 교육인적자원부가 관리하는 국가 서버

Governmental network
- community server: it is a place for 20~50 citizens to save large files, to backup their daily activities, and to run various educational softwares (acitivities) which is too large to be on XO laptops for citizens, Larger OLPC. OLPC Korea estimates about 10~100 community servers shall compose a county network which is contolled by a county server. It's role is similar to that of class server, but for citizens rather than children.
- county server (읍면동): it is the machine controlling community servers in county.
- local server (시군구): it is to manage county servers in an area with about 100,000 populations.
- wide area server (광역자치단체): it is to manage local servers in an area with about 5,000,000 populations (광역자치단체)
- national server: it is to manage wide area servers in a country.
- one community server per about 20 citizens- layer 5: the lowest server layer 각 마을 공동체가 관리하는 마을 서버
- one county server per 20~100 community server of each town- layer 4: 각 읍면동이 관리하는 지역 서버
- one local server per 10~50 county server - layer 3: 시군구 정부기관이 관할하는 시군구 서버
- one wide area server per 10~50 local server - layer 2: 각 광역자치단체가 관할하는 15개 광역자치단체 서버
- one national server for 16 wide area server: 중앙정부가 관리하는 국가 서버

Business network
According to UNSPSC (United Nations Standard Product & Service Classification), OLPC Korea will provide server architectures for business sectors. It will be managed under national wide scale rather than local aspects; that is, there are only one business server in Korea with regional communities in it.

School server & its derivatives
Because schools (even kindergartens also) in South Korea are all connected to the Internet now and provided of stable electricity 24hrs/365days, composing a network (stand-alone or not) is quite easy.
However, because we hope school servers to connect to (an)other school servers directly with or without using current cable networks, and because we hope OLPC and its derivatives be supplied to not only schools but other organizations also, we also make some derivatives of school servers suggested by the OLPC foundation.
There will be various types of servers in South Korea, ranging from a server for only one person to that for 1,000 persons.
