These are collections of books, images, maps, music, and other "library bundles" for download to the laptop.

Please click on the name of a collection for details. Each collection should indicate which builds it has been tested with.

If you have material for public consumption, follow the instructions in Creating a collection and add it to this grid. If you're not sure how to do this, add descriptions and links to the talk page.

At http://dev.laptop.org/~arael/preview/ you can preview some sample bundles.

Installing one collection

See Activity installation to install groups of activities.

To install a collection:

  1. start the Browse activity on your XO;
  2. go to this page in the browser;
  3. click on the Download link to an .xol bundle
  4. when it's finished, click OK.
  5. press the back key in Browse to return to the "OLPC Library" home page. The new content should appear in the appropriate section of the library navigation.

You can also copy a collection to a USB flash drive and install from that. Insert the USB flash drive into the XO, click its icon in the Journal, locate the collection, and choose Start.

Experts can install a collection by hand : unzip it into /home/olpc/Library (first create that directory if it does not exist) and run /usr/share/library-common/make_index.py. This should happen automatically when in Browse you download a file with the .xol mime-type.

Removing a collection

If you downloaded the collection yourself, you should have a Journal entry for it. Switch to the journal, navigate to the entry for the download of the .xol bundle, hover over it, and choose Erase. This will permanently uninstall the collection as well. When you view the "OLPC Library" page in Browse the content should be gone from the library navigation.

If the collection's .xol does not appear in the Journal (e.g. it came with a release or Activity group):

  1. Open the Terminal activity (remain as the "olpc" user, do not become "root").
  2. Delete the bundle's directory found in /home/olpc/Library/
  3. Run python /usr/share/library-common/make_index.py to update Browse's "OLPC Library" page.

Just a suggestion at this stage. Based on the assumption that we shouldn't be giving kids a limited selection of religious texts. It's too much like endorsing certain religions. To-do

  • Update the browser mime-type list so it knows how to unpack and stow away library bundles
  • Update the library main page to generate its navigation dynamically from its directory list
  • Publicise this standard to people with game, audio, video, text, and other libraries; including activities that are registering mime-types with the browser and want to offer a way to browse their projects without launching them directly: for instance, Etoys should automatically produce a collection linking to its projects on the laptop build... perhaps with a section linking to other projects online.
  • Define the generic bundle type for simple collections of files to be shared
  • Unify bundle metadata and extensions to avoid extra custom formats and specialized hacks
  • Set up converters for SCORM and similar zipped formats that track extra data about bundle use or bundle-related data. (note that in current implementation, it makes more sense to convert them to 'activity' bundles than to 'content' bundles since they capture usage data and provide that to [the browser/launching app].)
